Abdullah bin Masud reported,

"Whoever swears an oath by which he wrongfully claims someone's property will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Then Allah revealed confirmation of this, "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price... will face a painful punishment" [Aal Imran 3:77].Then Ashath bin Qays came out to us and asked, "What has Abu Abdul-Rahman been telling you?"We told him what he had said.He replied, "He spoke the truth. It was revealed concerning me. There was a dispute between me and another man over something, so we brought our case before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He said, 'Produce your two witnesses, or he takes the oath.'I said, 'In that case he will swear without any concern.'The Prophet ﷺ then said, 'Whoever swears an oath by which he wrongfully claims someone's property, while lying in that oath, will meet Allah while He is angry with him.'Then Allah revealed confirmation of this," and he recited this verse.

حدثنا عثمان بن أبي شيبة حدثنا جرير عن منصور عن أبي وائل قال قال

من حلف على يمين يستحق بها مالا لقي الله وهو عليه غضبان ثم أنزل الله تصديق ذلك {إن الذين يشترون بعهد الله وأيمانهم إلى عذاب أليم} ثم إن الأشعث بن قيس خرج إلينا فقال ما يحدثكم أبو عبد الرحمن فحدثناه بما قال فقال صدق لفي أنزلت كان بيني وبين رجل خصومة في شيء فاختصمنا إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال شاهداك أو يمينه فقلت له إنه إذا يحلف ولا يبالي فقال النبي ﷺ من حلف على يمين يستحق بها مالا وهو فيها فاجر لقي الله عز وجل وهو عليه غضبان فأنزل الله تصديق ذلك ثم اقترأ هذه الآية
