One day I was sitting with some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ at a stopping place along the road to Mecca. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had camped ahead of us. The group were in the state of ihram, but I was not. They spotted a wild donkey while I was busy mending my sandal. They did not alert me to it, though they hoped I would notice it on my own. I happened to turn and saw it, so I went to my horse, saddled it, and mounted, but I forgot the whip and the spear.I said to them, "Hand me the whip and the spear."They replied, "No, by Allah, we will not help you with it in any way."I became angry, dismounted, picked them up myself, then mounted again, charged at the donkey, and brought it down. I returned with it dead, and they fell upon it and began eating it. Then they had second thoughts about eating it while in the state of ihram. We set off, and I kept the foreleg with me. We caught up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about it.He said, "Do you have any of it with you?"I said, "Yes," and handed him the foreleg. He ate it until it was finished, and he was in the state of ihram.Zayd bin Aslam narrated this to me from Ata bin Yasar from Abu Qatada from the Prophet ﷺ.
