Barirah came to Ayesha seeking her help in paying off her writ of manumission. She owed five uqiyahs, to be paid in installments over five years.Ayesha, feeling sympathy for her, said to her, "What if I count out the full amount to your owners in one payment, would they sell you to me so I could free you, and your loyalty would belong to me?"Barirah went to her owners and put the proposal to them, but they refused, saying, "Not unless the right of loyalty stays with us."Ayesha said, "I went in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Buy her and free her, for the right of loyalty belongs to the one who frees the slave."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and said, "What is the matter with Some men who impose conditions that are not in the Book of Allah? Whoever stipulates a condition that is not in the Book of Allah, it is invalid. The condition of Allah is more deserving and more binding."
وقال الليث حدثني يونس، عن ابن شهاب، قال عروة قالت
إن بريرة دخلت عليها تستعينها في كتابتها وعليها خمسة أواق، نجمت عليها في خمس سنين، فقالت لها عائشة ونفست فيها أرأيت إن عددت لهم عدة واحدة، أيبيعك أهلك، فأعتقك، فيكون ولاؤك لي فذهبت بريرة إلى أهلها، فعرضت ذلك عليهم فقالوا لا إلا أن يكون لنا الولاء. قالت عائشة فدخلت على رسول الله ﷺ فذكرت ذلك له. فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ اشتريها فأعتقيها، فإنما الولاء لمن أعتق. ثم قام رسول الله ﷺ فقال ما بال رجال يشترطون شروطا ليست في كتاب الله، من اشترط شرطا ليس في كتاب الله فهو باطل، شرط الله أحق وأوثق.
