Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam reported,

The Prophet ﷺ stood up when the delegation of Hawazin came to him asking that he return their property and their captives. He said, "With me are those whom you see, and the dearest speech to me is the most truthful. So choose between one of two things, either the property or the captives. I have been waiting for you."The Prophet ﷺ had waited for them more than ten nights after returning from Taif. When it became clear to them that the Prophet ﷺ would not return more than one of the two, they said, "Then we choose our captives."The Prophet ﷺ then stood among the people, praised Allah as He deserves, and said, "To proceed. Your brothers have come to us repentant, and I have decided to return their captives to them. So whoever among you wishes to do this willingly, let him do so. And whoever wishes to keep his share until we give him compensation from the first spoils Allah grants us, let him do so."The people said, "We give it willingly for your sake."He said, "We cannot tell which of you has agreed and which has not. So go back, and let your leaders bring your decision to us."The people went back, their leaders spoke with them, then returned to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him that they had agreed willingly and consented. This is what has reached us regarding the captives of Hawazin.Anas said, Abbas said to the Prophet ﷺ, "I paid the ransom for myself and I paid the ransom for Aqeel."
