We were with the Prophet ﷺ at Dhul-Hulayfah in Tihamah when we captured some sheep and camels. The people hurried and set the cooking pots boiling with the meat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and ordered that the pots be overturned. Then he equated ten sheep to one camel for distribution.A camel then bolted away, and the people had only a few horses among them. A man shot it with an arrow and brought it down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "These animals have wild instincts like wild beasts, so whatever of them gets the better of you, deal with it in this way."My grandfather said, "Messenger of Allah, we hope, or we fear, that we will meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives. Can we slaughter with reeds?"He replied, "Be quick, or let it spill blood freely, and mention the name of Allah over it, then eat. But not with a tooth or a nail, and I will tell you why. As for the tooth, it is a bone, and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians."
حدثنا محمد أخبرنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبيه عن عباية بن رفاعة
كنا مع النبي ﷺ بذي الحليفة من تهامة فأصبنا غنما وإبلا فعجل القوم فأغلوا بها القدور فجاء رسول الله ﷺ فأمر بها فأكفئت ثم عدل عشرا من الغنم بجزور ثم إن بعيرا ند وليس في القوم إلا خيل يسيرة فرماه رجل فحبسه بسهم فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن لهذه البهائم أوابد كأوابد الوحش فما غلبكم منها فاصنعوا به هكذا قال قال جدي يا رسول الله إنا نرجو أو نخاف أن نلقى العدو غدا وليس معنا مدى فنذبح بالقصب فقال اعجل أو أرني ما أنهر الدم وذكر اسم الله عليه فكلوا ليس السن والظفر وسأحدثكم عن ذلك أما السن فعظم وأما الظفر فمدى الحبشة
