We were with the Prophet ﷺ at Dhul-Hulayfah when the people were struck by hunger. They captured some camels and sheep, and the Prophet ﷺ was at the rear of the group. The people hurried, slaughtered the animals, and set up the cooking pots. The Prophet ﷺ ordered the pots to be overturned, then he divided the spoils, equating ten sheep to one camel.One of the camels bolted, and they pursued it, but it exhausted them. There were only a few horses among the people, so a man shot an arrow at it, and Allah brought it to a halt.Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "These beasts have wild streaks like the wild streaks of game animals, so whichever of them gets the better of you, do with it as this man did."My grandfather said, "We hope, or we fear, to meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives. Shall we slaughter with reeds?"He replied, "Whatever causes the blood to flow, and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, eat it, except for the tooth and the nail. I will tell you about that. As for the tooth, it is a bone, and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians."
حدثنا علي بن الحكم الأنصاري حدثنا أبو عوانة عن سعيد بن مسروق
كنا مع النبي ﷺ بذي الحليفة فأصاب الناس جوع فأصابوا إبلا وغنما قال وكان النبي ﷺ في أخريات القوم فعجلوا وذبحوا ونصبوا القدور فأمر النبي ﷺ بالقدور فأكفئت ثم قسم فعدل عشرة من الغنم ببعير فند منها بعير فطلبوه فأعياهم وكان في القوم خيل يسيرة فأهوى رجل منهم بسهم فحبسه الله ثم قال إن لهذه البهائم أوابد كأوابد الوحش فما غلبكم منها فاصنعوا به هكذا فقال جدي إنا نرجو أو نخاف العدو غدا وليست معنا مدى أفنذبح بالقصب قال ما أنهر الدم وذكر اسم الله عليه فكلوه ليس السن والظفر وسأحدثكم عن ذلك أما السن فعظم وأما الظفر فمدى الحبشة
