Suwayd bin Ghafla reported,

I was with Salman bin Rabia and Zayd bin Suhan on a military expedition when I found a whip. They said to me, "Throw it away."I replied, "No. If I find its owner, I will return it to him. Otherwise, I will make use of it myself."When we returned, we went on Hajj, and I passed through Medina. There I asked Ubayy bin Kaab about it. He said, "I once found a purse during the time of the Prophet ﷺ containing one hundred Dinars. I brought it to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, 'Announce it for a year.'So I announced it for a year, then came back to him. He said, 'Announce it for another year.'So I announced it for another year, then returned to him. He said, 'Announce it for another year.'So I announced it for another year. Then I came to him a fourth time, and he said, 'Note its number, its tie, and its container. If its owner comes, give it to him. Otherwise, make use of it.'"Abdan narrated to us, saying: My father informed me, from Shuba, from Salama, with this report. He said, I met him later in Mecca, and he said, "I do not know whether he said three years or one year."

حدثنا سليمان بن حرب حدثنا شعبة عن سلمة بن كهيل قال سمعت

سويد بن غفلة قال

كنت مع سلمان بن ربيعة وزيد بن صوحان في غزاة فوجدت سوطا فقالا لي ألقه قلت لا ولكن إن وجدت صاحبه وإلا استمتعت به فلما رجعنا حججنا فمررت بالمدينة فسألت أبي بن كعب رضي الله عنه فقال وجدت صرة على عهد النبي ﷺ فيها مائة دينار فأتيت بها النبي ﷺ فقال عرفها حولا فعرفتها حولا ثم أتيت فقال عرفها حولا فعرفتها حولا ثم أتيته فقال عرفها حولا فعرفتها حولا ثم أتيته الرابعة فقال اعرف عدتها ووكاءها ووعاءها فإن جاء صاحبها وإلا استمتع بها حدثنا عبدان قال أخبرني أبي عن شعبة عن سلمة بهذا قال فلقيته بعد بمكة فقال لا أدري أثلاثة أحوال أو حولا واحدا
