The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a lost item that someone finds. He reportedly said, "Identify its container and its tying string, then announce it publicly for one year."Yazid said, "If no one recognizes it, the finder may spend it, and it remains as a trust in his keeping."Yahya said, "This is the part I am not certain about, whether it belongs to the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or whether it is something from Yazid himself."Then the man asked, "What do you think about a stray sheep?"The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it, for it is either for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf."Yazid said, "It too should be announced."Then the man asked, "What do you think about a stray camel?"He said, "Leave it alone, for it has its hooves and its water supply with it. It can reach water and eat from the trees until its owner finds it."
حدثنا إسماعيل بن عبد الله قال حدثني سليمان بن بلال عن يحيى عن يزيد مولى المنبعث أنه سمع
سئل النبي ﷺ عن اللقطة فزعم أنه قال اعرف عفاصها ووكاءها ثم عرفها سنة يقول يزيد إن لم تعرف استنفق بها صاحبها وكانت وديعة عنده قال يحيى فهذا الذي لا أدري أفي حديث رسول الله ﷺ هو أم شيء من عنده ثم قال كيف ترى في ضالة الغنم قال النبي ﷺ خذها فإنما هي لك أو لأخيك أو للذئب قال يزيد وهي تعرف أيضا ثم قال كيف ترى في ضالة الإبل قال فقال دعها فإن معها حذاءها وسقاءها ترد الماء وتأكل الشجر حتى يجدها ربها
