A group of the Prophet's ﷺ companions set out on a journey until they camped near one of the Arab tribes. They asked the tribe to host them, but the tribe refused. Then the chief of that tribe was stung, and they tried everything to help him, but nothing worked.Some of them said, "Why don't you go to those travelers who have camped here? Perhaps one of them has something."So they came to them and said, "Travelers, our chief has been stung, and we have tried everything for him without success. Does any of you have anything?"One of them replied, "Yes, by Allah, I do perform ruqyah. But by Allah, we asked you for hospitality and you refused to host us, so I will not perform ruqyah for you unless you give us a payment."So they agreed on a flock of sheep. He went and began spitting lightly on him while reciting "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds" [Fatihah 1:2]. The chief got up as if released from a tether and walked away with no sign of illness.They then paid them the agreed-upon fee. Some of the companions said, "Let us divide it."But the one who had performed the ruqyah said, "Do not do so until we come to the Prophet ﷺ and tell him what happened, then see what he commands us."So they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it.He asked, "How did you know that it was a ruqyah?"Then he said, "You have done well. Divide it, and assign me a share along with you." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed.Abu Abdullah said, Shuba reported, Abu Bishr narrated to us, I heard Abu al-Mutawakkil relate this.
حدثنا أبو النعمان حدثنا أبو عوانة عن أبي بشر عن أبي المتوكل
انطلق نفر من أصحاب النبي ﷺ في سفرة سافروها حتى نزلوا على حي من أحياء العرب فاستضافوهم فأبوا أن يضيفوهم فلدغ سيد ذلك الحي فسعوا له بكل شيء لا ينفعه شيء فقال بعضهم لو أتيتم هؤلاء الرهط الذين نزلوا لعله أن يكون عند بعضهم شيء فأتوهم فقالوا يا أيها الرهط إن سيدنا لدغ وسعينا له بكل شيء لا ينفعه فهل عند أحد منكم من شيء فقال بعضهم نعم والله إني لأرقي ولكن والله لقد استضفناكم فلم تضيفونا فما أنا براق لكم حتى تجعلوا لنا جعلا فصالحوهم على قطيع من الغنم فانطلق يتفل عليه ويقرأ الحمد لله رب العالمين فكأنما نشط من عقال فانطلق يمشي وما به قلبة قال فأوفوهم جعلهم الذي صالحوهم عليه فقال بعضهم اقسموا فقال الذي رقى لا تفعلوا حتى نأتي النبي ﷺ فنذكر له الذي كان فننظر ما يأمرنا فقدموا على رسول الله ﷺ فذكروا له فقال وما يدريك أنها رقية ثم قال قد أصبتم اقسموا واضربوا لي معكم سهما فضحك رسول الله ﷺ قال أبو عبد الله وقال شعبة حدثنا أبو بشر سمعت أبا المتوكل بهذا
