When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal fell ill with fever.Whenever the fever overtook Abu Bakr, he would recite, "Every man is greeted in the morning among his family, while death is closer to him than the strap of his sandal."And whenever the fever lifted from Bilal, he would raise his voice and recite, "Would that I knew whether I shall spend a night once more in a valley with idhkhir grass and jalil all around me, and whether I shall come down one day to the waters of Majannah, and whether Shamah and Tafil shall appear before my eyes."Then he said, "O Allah, curse Shayba bin Rabia, Utba bin Rabia, and Umaya bin Khalaf, for they drove us out from our land into a land of pestilence."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prayed, "O Allah, make Medina as beloved to us as Mecca, or even more so. O Allah, bless us in our saa and in our mudd, give us good health in it, and transfer its fever to al-Juhfa."She said, "We arrived in Medina when it was the most disease-ridden of Allah's lands."She said that Buthan used to flow with stagnant, foul water.
حدثنا عبيد بن إسماعيل حدثنا أبو أسامة عن هشام عن أبيه
لما قدم رسول الله ﷺ المدينة وعك أبو بكر وبلال فكان أبو بكر إذا أخذته الحمى يقول كل امرئ مصبح في أهله والموت أدنى من شراك نعله وكان بلال إذا أقلع عنه الحمى يرفع عقيرته يقول ألا ليت شعري هل أبيتن ليلة بواد وحولي إذخر وجليل وهل أردن يوما مياه مجنة وهل يبدون لي شامة وطفيل قال اللهم العن شيبة بن ربيعة وعتبة بن ربيعة وأمية بن خلف كما أخرجونا من أرضنا إلى أرض الوباء ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ اللهم حبب إلينا المدينة كحبنا مكة أو أشد اللهم بارك لنا في صاعنا وفي مدنا وصححها لنا وانقل حماها إلى الجحفة قالت وقدمنا المدينة وهي أوبأ أرض الله قالت فكان بطحان يجري نجلا تعني ماء آجنا
