Whenever Abdullah bin Umar was spoken to during the nights when the army camped against Ibn Zubayr, they would say to him, "It will not harm you to skip the pilgrimage this year, for we fear that you may be prevented from reaching the House."He replied, "We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the disbelievers of Quraysh blocked us from the House. The Prophet ﷺ then sacrificed his offering and shaved his head. I call you to witness that I have made umrah binding upon myself, Allah willing. I will set out, and if I am given clear access to the House, I will perform the circumambulation. But if I am prevented from reaching it, I will do as the Prophet ﷺ did, and I was with him."Then he entered the state of ihram for umrah at Dhul Hulayfa. After traveling for a while, he said, "The matter of the two is one and the same. I call you to witness that I have now made hajj binding upon myself together with my umrah."He did not exit the state of ihram from either of them until he exited it on the Day of Sacrifice, and he offered a sacrificial animal. He used to say that one does not exit ihram until he performs a single circumambulation on the day he enters Mecca.
