A man came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was at Jiranah, wearing a long robe with traces of perfume on it, or he said yellow dye, and asked, "How do you command me to perform my umrah?"Then revelation descended upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he was covered with a cloth. The narrator said, "I had wished that I could see the Prophet ﷺ at the moment revelation was being sent down to him."So Umar said, "Come, would it please you to look at the Prophet ﷺ while revelation is descending upon him?"I said, "Yes."He lifted the edge of the cloth, and I looked at him. He was making a heavy breathing sound, and I think he said, like the snorting of a young camel. When the state passed from him, he said, "Where is the one who asked about the umrah? Take off the robe, wash the traces of perfume from yourself, remove the yellow dye, and do in your umrah as you do in your hajj."
Bukhari and Muslim agreed on the hadith of Ataa from Safwan bin Yaala from his father, the hadith of the cloak in ihram, in which it says, "Do in your umrah what you do in your hajj," from the narration of Ibn Jurayj and Hammam. Muslim added Amr bin Dinar, Rabah bin Abu Maruf, and Qays bin Saad, from Ataa, from Safwan bin Yaala, from his father.Qatada, Matar Warraq, Mansur bin Zazan, Abdul-Malik bin Abu Sulayman, Sulayman bin Abu Dawud, and several others narrated it from Ataa, from Yaala bin Umaya, as a mursal narration, without mentioning Safwan bin Yaala bin Umaya in it. Likewise, Thawri said it from Ibn Jurayj and Ibn Abu Layla, from Ataa, as mursal.
Al-Hafiz, may Allah have mercy on him, said in the introduction (p. 357, printed edition), after quoting the words of Daraqutni,I say, in the narration of Ibn Jurayj, "Ata told me that Safwan bin Yaala informed him, from Yaala," according to it, while the narration of everyone else who mentioned it from Ata from Yaala uses "an" without specifying direct hearing. This shows that Ata did not narrate it from Yaala except through the intermediary of his son, and Ibn Jurayj is among the people most knowledgeable about the hadith of Ata, and he has explicitly stated that he heard it from him. So finding fault with it on such grounds is not sound, as we have stated more than once.
