Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

He was asked about tamattu in hajj, so he said, "The Muhajirun, the Ansar, and the wives of the Prophet ﷺ entered the state of ihram during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and we entered ihram with them. When we arrived in Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Make your ihram for hajj into an umrah, except for those who have brought a sacrificial animal with garlands.'So we performed tawaf around the Kaaba, walked between Safa and Marwa, went to our wives, and put on regular clothes. He said, 'Whoever has brought a garlanded sacrificial animal cannot exit ihram until the animal reaches its place of slaughter.'Then on the evening of Tarwiyah he commanded us to enter ihram for hajj. Once we completed the rites, we came and performed tawaf around the Kaaba and walked between Safa and Marwa, and our hajj was complete. We owed a sacrifice, as Allah the Exalted said, "Whatever sacrificial animal is easily available. But whoever cannot find one must fast three days during the hajj and seven when you return" [Baqarah 2:196] to your home regions.A sheep is sufficient. So they combined two rites in one year, hajj and umrah, for Allah the Exalted revealed this in His Book, His Prophet ﷺ established it as sunnah, and He permitted it for people other than the residents of Makkah. Allah said, "That is for those whose family is not present at the Sacred Mosque" [Baqarah 2:196].The months of hajj that Allah the Exalted mentioned are Shawwal, Dhul-Qadah, and Dhul-Hijjah. Whoever performs tamattu during these months must offer a sacrifice or fast. Rafath means sexual intercourse, fusuq means acts of disobedience, and jidal means quarreling."
