Abu Bakr wrote this letter for him when he sent him to Bahrain. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the obligation of charity which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made obligatory upon the Muslims, and which Allah commanded His Messenger to impose. Whoever among the Muslims is asked for it in the prescribed manner should give it, and whoever is asked for more than that should not give it.For up to twenty-four camels, the charity is sheep. For every five camels, one sheep is due. When the number reaches twenty-five up to thirty-five, a one-year-old female camel is due. When it reaches thirty-six up to forty-five, a two-year-old female camel is due. When it reaches forty-six up to sixty, a three-year-old female camel that is fit to be mated by a male is due. When it reaches sixty-one up to seventy-five, a four-year-old female camel is due. When it reaches seventy-six up to ninety, two two-year-old female camels are due. When it reaches ninety-one up to one hundred and twenty, two three-year-old female camels fit to be mated by a male are due. When it exceeds one hundred and twenty, then for every forty a two-year-old female camel is due, and for every fifty a three-year-old female camel is due.Whoever has only four camels owes no charity on them, unless their owner wishes to give. When they reach five camels, one sheep is due.As for the charity on grazing sheep, when they number from forty up to one hundred and twenty, one sheep is due. When they exceed one hundred and twenty up to two hundred, two sheep are due. When they exceed two hundred up to three hundred, three sheep are due. When they exceed three hundred, then for every hundred one sheep is due. If a man's grazing sheep are one short of forty, no charity is due on them, unless their owner wishes to give.On silver, one-fortieth is due. If it amounts to only one hundred and ninety, nothing is due on it, unless its owner wishes to give.
Bukhari narrated it from Ansari, from his father, from Thumamah, from Anas, the hadith of the alms taxes. But Thumamah bin Anas did not hear this himself, nor did Abdullah bin Muthanna hear it from his uncle Thumamah.Ali bin Madini said, Abdullah bin Muthanna told me, Thumamah handed me this book.He said, Affan told us, Hammad told us, I took a book from Thumamah, from Anas, similar to this.Hammad bin Zayd likewise said, from Ayub, Thumamah gave me a book, and he mentioned this.
Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, regarding his statement "Thumama narrated to me," that this refers to the uncle of the narrator reporting from him, since he is Abdullah bin Muthanna bin Abdullah bin Anas bin Malik. This chain of transmission is a continuous chain of Basrans from the family of Anas bin Malik, and Abu Zura, Abu Hatim, and Ajli affirmed its strength. As for Nasai, he said, "It is not strong." Regarding Abdullah bin Muthanna, Ibn Main's opinion of him varied, sometimes saying he was sound and other times saying, "He is nothing." Aqeeli said, "His hadith is not corroborated." This ends the quotation.Hammad bin Salama corroborated him on this hadith, narrating it from Thumama bin Abdullah bin Anas, from Anas, that Abu Bakr wrote it for Anas when he sent him as a collector of zakat, and then he mentioned the hadith. This is how Abu Dawud recorded it, from Abu Salama, from him. Ahmad also narrated it in his Musnad, saying, Abu Kamil narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, saying, I took this document from Thumama, from Anas, that Abu Bakr wrote it for Anas, with the seal of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, on it, when he sent him as a collector of zakat, and then he mentioned it.
