When the verse on charity was revealed, we used to carry loads on our backs to earn something to give. A man came and donated a large amount, and people said, "He is showing off."Then another man came and donated a single saa, and they said, "Allah has no need of this man's saa."So the verse was revealed, "Those who criticize the believers who give charity voluntarily and ridicule those who find nothing to give except their modest effort" [Tawbah 9:79].
