The Prophet ﷺ said, "Zayd took the banner and was struck down. Then Jafar took it and was struck down. Then Abdullah bin Rawaha took it and was struck down." The eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were shedding tears as he spoke. He continued, "Then Khalid bin Walid took it without being appointed, and Allah granted victory through him."
حدثنا أبو معمر حدثنا عبد الوارث حدثنا أيوب عن حميد بن هلال
قال النبي ﷺ أخذ الراية زيد فأصيب ثم أخذها جعفر فأصيب ثم أخذها عبد الله بن رواحة فأصيب وإن عيني رسول الله ﷺ لتذرفان ثم أخذها خالد بن الوليد من غير إمرة ففتح له
