The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up one day to address us at a watering place called Khumm, between Makkah and Madinah. He praised Allah and glorified Him, then admonished and reminded us, and said:"To proceed. People, I am only a human being, and the messenger of my Lord is about to come to me, and I will answer his call. I am leaving among you two weighty things. The first is the Book of Allah, which contains guidance and light, so take hold of the Book of Allah and cling to it firmly."He urged and encouraged us to follow the Book of Allah, then said, "And the people of my household. I remind you, by Allah, of the people of my household. I remind you, by Allah, of the people of my household. I remind you, by Allah, of the people of my household."Husayn asked him, "Who are the people of his household, Zayd? Are his wives not among the people of his household?"He replied, "His wives are part of his household, but the people of his household are those for whom charity is forbidden after him."Husayn asked, "And who are they?"He answered, "They are the family of Ali, the family of Aqeel, the family of Jafar, and the family of Abbas."Husayn asked, "Is charity forbidden to all of them?"He replied, "Yes."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2408) through several chains from Ismail bin Ibrahim, who said, Abu Hayan narrated to me, who said, Yazid bin Hayan narrated to me, saying, I set out along with Husayn bin Sabra and Umar bin Muslim to see Zayd bin Arqam. When we sat with him, Husayn said to him, "You have indeed encountered much good, Yazid. You saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, heard his speech, fought alongside him, and prayed behind him. You have indeed encountered much good, Yazid. Tell us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "O son of my brother, by Allah, I have grown old, my time has become distant, and I have forgotten some of what I used to retain from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So whatever I tell you, accept it, and whatever I do not, do not press me for it." Then he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up one day," and he mentioned the hadith. This hadith does not contain a command to hold fast to the guidance of the Prophet's ﷺ household. Rather, it contains the obligation to show them consideration and love, and to avoid whatever displeases them, so long as they hold fast to the Book and the sunnah. This is what the companions understood, for Abu Bakr Siddiq said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, the kinship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is dearer to me to uphold than my own kinship." Bukhari narrated it (3712).As for taking their sayings and holding fast to their deeds alongside the Book of Allah, nothing has been established regarding that.
