Saad bin Abu Waqqas reported,

Umm Saad swore that she would never speak to him again until he renounced his religion, and that she would neither eat nor drink. She said, "You claim that Allah has charged you to care for your parents. I am your mother, and I command you to do this."Saad said, "She held out for three days, until she fainted from exhaustion. Then a son of hers named Umara got up and gave her something to drink, and she began praying against Saad. So Allah عز وجل revealed this verse in the Quran, 'And We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents' [Ankabut 29:8], and 'But if they strive to make you associate others with Me' [Luqman 31:15], and in the same passage, 'and keep company with them in this world in a kindly manner' [Luqman 31:15]."Saad continued, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a great quantity of spoils, and among them was a sword. I took it and brought it to the Messenger ﷺ and said, 'Award me this sword, for you know well what my situation is.'He said, 'Put it back where you got it from.'So I set off, but when I was about to throw it onto the pile of spoils, I reproached myself and went back to him and said, 'Give it to me.'He raised his voice and said, 'Put it back where you got it from.'Then Allah عز وجل revealed, 'They ask you about the spoils' [Anfal 8:1]."Saad said, "I fell ill and sent word to the Prophet ﷺ, and he came to me. I said, 'Let me distribute my wealth however I wish.'He refused.I said, 'Then half.'He refused.I said, 'Then a third.'He said nothing, and after that a third was permitted."Saad said, "I came upon a group of the Ansar and the Emigrants, and they said, 'Come, we will feed you and give you wine to drink.' This was before wine was forbidden. So I went to them in a walled garden, and there was a roasted camel's head with them and a skin of wine. I ate and drank with them, and the Ansar and the Emigrants were mentioned in their company. I said, 'The Emigrants are better than the Ansar.'At that, one of the men took one of the jawbones of the head and struck me with it, cutting my nose. I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it, and Allah عز وجل revealed concerning me, meaning himself, about wine, 'Wine, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are but a defilement from the work of Satan' [Maidah 5:90]."
