On the day of Uhud, when the people fled, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on one side with twelve men from the Ansar, among them Talha bin Ubaydullah. The polytheists overtook them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned and said, "Who will take on these people?"Talha said, "I will."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stay where you are."A man from the Ansar said, "I will, Messenger of Allah!"He said, "You go." So the man fought until he was killed. Then the Prophet turned and saw the polytheists again, and he said, "Who will take on these people?"Talha said, "I will."He said, "Stay where you are."A man from the Ansar said, "I will."He said, "You go." So the man fought until he was killed. He kept saying this, and a man from the Ansar would go out to fight them as the one before him had fought, until he was killed, until only the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Talha bin Ubaydullah remained. The Messenger of Allah said, "Who will take on these people?"Talha said, "I will." So Talha fought as the eleven before him had fought, until his hand was struck and his fingers were cut off, and he cried, "Hass!"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Had you said, 'In the name of Allah,' the angels would have raised you up while the people watched."Then Allah turned the polytheists back.
Nasai narrated it (3149), and from him Ibn Sunni in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (670), from Amr bin Sawwad, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, Yahya bin Ayub told me, mentioning another narrator before him, from Umara bin Ghaziya, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related it.Its chain is hasan because of Umara bin Ghaziya and Yahya bin Ayub, for the two of them make the hadith hasan.
