Yazid bin Hayyan said, "I set out together with Husayn bin Sabra and Umar bin Muslim to visit Zayd bin Arqam. When we sat down with him, Husayn said to him, 'You have been granted great good, Zayd. You saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, heard his words, fought alongside him, and prayed behind him. You have indeed been granted great good, Zayd. Tell us, Zayd, what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'Zayd replied, "Nephew, by Allah, I have grown old, my time has grown distant, and I have forgotten some of what I used to retain from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So whatever I tell you, accept it, and what I do not, do not press me for."Then he said, "One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to address us at a watering place called Khumm, between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then preached and gave admonition. Then he said, 'Now then, people, I am only a human being, and the messenger of my Lord is about to come to me and I shall respond. I am leaving among you two weighty things. The first is the Book of Allah, in which is guidance and light, so take hold of the Book of Allah and cling to it.' He urged us to follow the Book of Allah and encouraged us in it. Then he said, 'And the people of my household. I remind you of Allah regarding the people of my household. I remind you of Allah regarding the people of my household. I remind you of Allah regarding the people of my household.'"Husayn asked him, "Who are the people of his household, Zayd? Are his wives not part of his household?"Zayd replied, "His wives are part of his household, but the people of his household are those for whom charity is forbidden after him."Husayn asked, "And who are they?"Zayd answered, "They are the family of Ali, the family of Aqeel, the family of Jafar, and the family of Abbas."Husayn asked, "Is charity forbidden to all of them?"Zayd replied, "Yes."
Muslim reported it in "The Virtues of the Companions" (2408-36) through several chains from Ibn Ulaya, who said, Abu Hayan told me, who said, Yazid bin Hayan told me, who said, "I set out, myself and..." then he related it.In another wording given by Muslim, "Behold, I am leaving among you two weighty things. The first is the Book of Allah , which is the rope of Allah. Whoever follows it is upon guidance, and whoever abandons it is upon misguidance."It also states, "We said, 'Who are the people of his household? His wives?' He said, 'No, by Allah. A woman stays with a man for a period of time, then he divorces her and she returns to her father and her people. The people of his household are those of his lineage and kinsmen who are forbidden from receiving charity after him.'"Muslim also reported it (37) through another route from Yazid bin Hayan, from Zayd bin Arqam, relating something similar to the hadith of Abu Hayan, except that he said, "then he related it."
