I saw Umar bin Khattab ﷺ in Medina a few days before he was struck down. He stopped before Huzaifa bin Yaman and Uthman bin Hunayf and said, "How have you handled the matter? Do you fear that you have burdened the land with more than it can bear?"They replied, "We have burdened it only with what it can bear. There is no great surplus."Umar said, "Look carefully, lest you have burdened the land with more than it can bear."They said, "No."Then Umar said, "If Allah preserves me, I will leave the widows of Iraq never needing any man after me."Not four days had passed before he was struck down. The narrator said, On the morning he was struck, I was standing with no one between me and him except Abdullah bin Abbas. Whenever Umar passed between the rows, he would say, "Straighten your lines." When he saw no gaps in them, he would step forward and say the takbir. He would often recite Surah Yusuf or an-Nahl or something similar in the first rakah so the people could gather. He had only just said the takbir when I heard him say, "The dog has killed me," or "eaten me," at the moment he was stabbed. The non-Arab flew off with a two-edged knife, stabbing every man he passed on his right or left, until he had stabbed thirteen men, seven of whom died. When a man among the Muslims saw this, he threw a cloak over him. When the foreigner realized he was caught, he killed himself.Umar took the hand of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf and pushed him forward to lead the prayer. Those near Umar saw what I saw, but those at the sides of the mosque did not know what had happened, only that they had lost Umar's voice, and they were saying, "Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah." So Abdul-Rahman led them in a brief prayer. When they finished, Umar said, "Ibn Abbas, see who killed me."He went around for a while, then returned and said, "Mughira's slave."Umar asked, "The craftsman?"Ibn Abbas replied, "Yes."Umar said, "May Allah fight him. I had ordered that he be treated well. Praise be to Allah who did not make my death come at the hand of a man who claims Islam. You and your father used to love that there be many foreigners in Medina." Most of their slaves were such foreigners.Ibn Abbas said, "If you wish, we will do it," meaning, "If you wish, we will kill them."Umar said, "You speak falsely. Not after they have spoken your tongue, prayed toward your qibla, and performed your hajj. Carry me to my house."So I went with him. It was as though the people had never been struck by such a calamity before that day. One person was saying, "He will be all right," and another was saying, "I fear for him." Some date drink was brought and he drank it, but it came out of his belly. Then milk was brought and he drank it, but it came out of his wound. So they knew he was dying. We went in to him, and the people came in praising him. A young man came and said, "Rejoice, Commander of the Faithful, in the glad tidings of Allah for you. You had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and an early standing in Islam as you know. Then you ruled and were just. Then comes martyrdom."Umar said, "I would wish that this be enough for me, neither against me nor for me."When the young man turned to leave, his lower garment was touching the ground. Umar said, "Bring the boy back to me." Then he said, "Nephew, lift up your garment, for that will keep your garment cleaner and is more pious before your Lord. Abdullah bin Umar, see what debt I owe."They calculated it and found it to be about eighty-six thousand. Umar said, "If the wealth of Umar's family covers it, pay it from their wealth. If not, then ask among Bani Adi bin Kaab. If their wealth is not sufficient, then ask among Quraysh, and do not go beyond them to others. Pay this debt on my behalf.Go to Ayesha, Mother of the Believers, and say, 'Umar sends his greetings of peace,' and do not say 'Commander of the Faithful,' for today I am no commander of the believers. And say, 'Umar bin Khattab asks permission to be buried with his two companions.'"So Abdullah went, gave greetings, and asked permission, then entered upon her and found her sitting in tears. He said, "Umar bin Khattab sends you his greetings of peace and asks permission to be buried with his two companions."She said, "I had wanted that place for myself, but today I will surely prefer him over myself."When he returned, it was said, "Here is Abdullah bin Umar coming."Umar said, "Lift me up." A man propped him up against himself.Umar asked, "What do you have for me?"He said, "What you wish, Commander of the Faithful. She has given permission."Umar said, "Praise be to Allah. Nothing was more important to me than that. When I have died, carry me, then give greetings and say, 'Umar bin Khattab asks permission.' If she gives me permission, take me in, but if she refuses me, take me back to the Muslim cemetery."Then Umm Muiminin Hafsa came, with the women walking with her. When we saw her, we got up. She went in to him and wept beside him for a while. Then the men asked permission to enter, so she went into an inner chamber set aside for them, and we heard her weeping from within. They said, "Make your bequest, Commander of the Faithful. Appoint a successor."He said, "I find no one more deserving of this matter than these six," or "this group, with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he died." He named Ali, Uthman, Zubayr, Talha, Saad, and Abdul-Rahman, and said, "Abdullah bin Umar will be a witness over you, but he has no share in the matter," as a form of consolation to him. "If the leadership falls to Saad, then so be it. Otherwise, whichever of you is appointed should seek his help, for I did not remove him from office out of incompetence or treachery."He said, "I charge the caliph after me concerning the first emigrants, that he recognize their right and preserve their honor. I charge him concerning the Ansar, the ones who established their home and faith before them, with kindness, that he accept from those of them who do good and overlook the faults of those of them who err. I charge him concerning the people of the garrison cities with kindness, for they are the shield of Islam, the gatherers of wealth, and the rage of the enemy, and that nothing be taken from them except their surplus, with their consent. I charge him concerning the bedouin Arabs with kindness, for they are the root of the Arabs and the substance of Islam, that what is taken from them be from the edges of their wealth and returned to their poor. And I charge him concerning the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger ﷺ, that their pact be fulfilled, that war be waged from behind them in their defense, and that they not be burdened beyond their capacity."When he died, we carried him out and walked along. Abdullah bin Umar gave greetings and said, "Umar bin Khattab asks permission."She said, "Bring him in."He was brought in and laid there with his two companions. When the burial was complete, this group gathered together. Abdul-Rahman said, "Entrust your matter to three among you."Zubayr said, "I entrust my matter to Ali."Talha said, "I entrust my matter to Uthman."Saad said, "I entrust my matter to Abdul-Rahman bin Awf."Then Abdul-Rahman said, "Which of you two will withdraw from this matter so we may entrust it to the other? Allah and Islam are watching over him, that he must look to the most worthy among them in his own judgment." The two elders fell silent.Abdul-Rahman said, "Will you entrust it to me, with Allah watching over me, that I will not fall short of choosing the best of you?"They said, "Yes."He took the hand of one of them and said, "You have kinship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the early standing in Islam that you know. So Allah is upon you, if I appoint you, that you will be just, and if I appoint Uthman, that you will hear and obey." Then he took the other aside and said the same to him. When he had taken their pledges, he said, "Raise your hand, Uthman," and pledged allegiance to him. Ali pledged allegiance to him, and the people of the house entered and pledged allegiance to him.
Bukhari related it in the Virtues of the Companions (3700), from Musa bin Ismail, who said, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Husayn, from Amr bin Maymun, who said, and then he related it. In another version of his there is further clarification of the story of the succession.
