Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

Whenever Umar bin Khattab ﷺ finished a prayer, he would sit for the people, available to anyone who had a need. If no one had a need, he would rise and go inside.He prayed several prayers without sitting for the people afterward. Ibn Abbas said, I came to the door and called out, "Barrah, is the Commander of the Believers ill?"He replied, "There is no illness with the Commander of the Believers."So I sat down. Then Uthman bin Affan ﷺ came and sat as well. Barrah came out and said, "Rise, Ibn Affan. Rise, Ibn Abbas."We entered upon Umar, and there before him were heaps of money, with a sack on each heap.Umar ﷺ said, "I have considered the people of Madinah, and I found the two of you among those with the largest clans. Take this money and distribute it. Whatever is left over, return it to me."As for Uthman ﷺ, he scooped it up with both hands. As for me, I knelt on my knees and said, "And if it falls short, will you make up the difference for us?"He said, "A chip off the same rough stone," meaning a stone from the mountain. "Was this available with Allah when Muhammad ﷺ and his companions were eating dried hides?"I said, "Yes, by Allah, this was available with Allah while Muhammad ﷺ was alive, and had it been opened up to him, he would have done with it something other than what you are doing."Umar ﷺ grew angry and said, "Tell me, what would he have done?"I said, "He would have eaten from it and fed us from it."Umar ﷺ then said "Subhan Allah" so much that his ribs trembled, then he said, "I wish I could come out of this even, with nothing for me and nothing against me."

عن ابن عباس

كان عمر بن الخطاب ﷺ إذا صلى صلاة جلس للناس لمن كانت له حاجة، فإن لم يكن لأحد حاجة قام فدخل، قال: فصلى صلوات لا يجلس للناس فيهن، قال ابن عباس: فحضرت الباب، فقلت: يا برة، فأبأمير المؤمنين شكاة؟ قال: ما بأمير المؤمنين من شكوى، فجلست، فجاء عثمان بن عفان ﷺ فجلس، فخرج برة، فقال: قم يا ابن عفان، قم يا ابن عباس، فدخلنا على عمر، فإذا بين يديه صبر من مال، على كل صبرة منها كيس، فقال عمر ﷺ: إني نظرت في أهل المدينة، فوجدتكما من أكثر أهلها عشيرة، فخذا هذا المال فاقسماه، فما كان من فضل فرداه، قال: فأما عثمان ﷺ فحثن، وأما أنا فجثوت على ركبتي فقلت: وإن كان نقصانا ردددت علينا، فقال: شنشنة من أخشن، يعني حجرا من جبل، أما كان هذا عند الله إذ محمد ﷺ وأصحابه يأكلون القد، فقلت: بلى، والله لقد كان هذا عند الله عز وجل ومحمد ﷺ حي، ولو عليه فتح لصنع فيه غير الذي تصنع، فغضب عمر ﷺ وقال: أخبرني صنع ماذا، قلت: إذا لأكل وأطعمنا، قال: فسبح عمر ﷺ حتى اختلفت أضلاعه، ثم قال: وددت أني خرجت منها كفافا لا لي ولا علي.
