I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when Abu Bakr approached, holding the edge of his garment so high that his knee was exposed. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Your companion has had a quarrel."Abu Bakr greeted him and said, "Something happened between me and Ibn al-Khattab. I spoke harshly to him, then regretted it and asked him to forgive me, but he refused. So I came to you."The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah forgive you, Abu Bakr," repeating it three times. Then Umar regretted what had happened and went to Abu Bakr's house and asked, "Is Abu Bakr here?"They said, "No."So he came to the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him. The Prophet's ﷺ face began to show displeasure, until Abu Bakr became apprehensive. He knelt on his knees and said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I was the one in the wrong," saying it twice. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah sent me to you, and you said, 'You have lied,' but Abu Bakr said, 'He has spoken the truth,' and he supported me with himself and his wealth. Will you not leave my companion alone for my sake?" He said it twice. After that, Abu Bakr was never harmed again.
Bukhari narrated it in Virtues of the Companions (3661), from Hisham bin Ammar, who said, Sadaqa bin Khalid narrated to us, who said, Zayd bin Waqid narrated to us, from Busr bin Ubaydullah, from Aaidullah Abu Idris, from Abu Darda, who said, then he mentioned it.And in another wording, "There was an argument between Abu Bakr and Umar. Abu Bakr made Umar angry, so Umar left him in anger. Abu Bakr followed him, asking him to seek forgiveness for him, but he would not do so, until he shut his door in his face. Then Abu Bakr came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ..." and he mentioned the rest in similar fashion.
