A delegation from Banu Asad came to the Prophet ﷺ and spoke, expressing themselves eloquently. They said, "Messenger of Allah, all of Mudar fought against you, yet we never fought you, and we are neither the smallest of them in number nor the weakest of them in arms, and we upheld the bonds of kinship with you."When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard what they said, he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar and asked, "Do they really speak like this?"One of them replied, "Messenger of Allah, their understanding is slight, and Satan is speaking through their tongues."Another narration adds that this verse was revealed, "They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, it is Allah who has done you a favor by guiding you to faith, if you are truthful" [Hujurat 49:17].
Nasai narrated it in Kubra (11455), Abu Yaala (2363), and Bazzar (5141), all of them through the hadith of Yahya bin Saeed Umawi, from Muhammad bin Qays Asadi, from Abu Awn Muhammad bin Ubaydullah Thaqafi, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. The wording given here is Abu Yaala's, and the addition is Bazzar's.Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated this hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with this wording except Ibn Abbas, and we do not know of any route for it from Ibn Abbas except this one route, and we do not know that Muhammad bin Ubaydullah related anything from Saeed bin Jubayr other than this hadith. Muhammad bin Ubaydullah is Abu Awn."I say, its chain is hasan because of Yahya bin Saeed Umawi, who is the son of Aban bin Saeed bin Aas, the Kufan.Waqidi said, at the beginning of the ninth year, a delegation from Banu Assad came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They were ten men, among them Dirar bin Azwar, Wabisa bin Mabad, Tulayha bin Khuwaylid, who later claimed prophethood and then accepted Islam and his Islam turned out well, and Naqada bin Abdullah bin Khalaf.Their leader, Hadrami bin Amir, said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, we came to you wrapping ourselves in the pitch-black night, in a bleak year of drought, though you sent no envoy to us."Then this verse was revealed concerning them, "They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, 'Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, it is Allah who has conferred favor upon you in that He has guided you to faith, if you should be truthful.'" [Hujurat 49:17].Among them was a tribe called Banu Zinyah, so he changed their name, saying, "You are Banu Rushdah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Naqada bin Abdullah bin Khalaf for a she-camel that would be good for riding and milking, provided she had no calf with her. He searched for one but could not find any except with a cousin of his, so he brought it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered it to be milked, drank from it, and gave him what remained to drink. Then he said, "O Allah, bless her and bless the one who gave her." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, and the one who brought her." He said, "And the one who brought her."Ibn Saad mentioned it in Tabaqat (1/292-293) from Waqidi, who said, Hisham bin Saad narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Kaab Qurazi, who said, and Hisham bin Muhammad Kalbi informed us, from his father, both of them said, ten men came, and he related it with slight variation. The wording here is Ibn Kathir's, in his Tarikh (7/351-352).
