I heard Abdullah bin Umar say, while standing at this pulpit, and he pointed to the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "The delegation of Abdul-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about drinks, so he forbade them from the gourd, the Naqi, and the green jar."I said to him, "Abu Muhammad, and the pitch-coated vessel?" thinking he had forgotten it.He replied, "I did not hear that from Abdullah bin Umar on that day, though he used to disapprove of it."
Muslim reported it in the chapter on Drinks (1997/58), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, "Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, Abdul-Khaliq bin Salama informed us, he said, I heard Saeed bin Musayab say," and he mentioned it.On this topic there is also a report from Hud Asri, from his grandfather, who said, "While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was speaking to his companions, he said, 'A group of riders from among the best people of the East will appear to you from this direction.'" Umar bin Khattab got up and went in that direction, where he met thirteen riders. He welcomed them and came close, and said, "Who are you people?" They said, "We are people from Abdul-Qays." He said, "What has brought you to this land? Trade?" They said, "No." He said, "Then are you selling these swords of yours?" They said, "No." He said, "Perhaps you have come seeking this man?" They said, "Yes." So he walked with them, talking to them, until he saw the Prophet ﷺ, and said to them, "This is the man you are seeking."The people threw themselves off their mounts, some of them running, some hurrying, and some walking, until they reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They took his hand, kissing it, and sat down beside him. Ashaj, the youngest of the group, stayed behind. He made the camels kneel and hobbled them, gathered the people's belongings, then came forward walking calmly until he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, took his hand, and kissed it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have two qualities that Allah and His Messenger love." He said, "What are they, O Prophet of Allah?" He said, "Forbearance and deliberateness." He said, "Were these instilled in my nature, or did I acquire them myself?" He said, "Rather, they are instilled in your nature." He said, "Praise be to Allah, who made my nature such that Allah and His Messenger love it."The people then brought forward some of their dates to eat, and the Prophet ﷺ began naming them, saying, "This is such-and-such, and this is such-and-such." They said, "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah, we are not more knowledgeable of their names than you." He said, "Indeed." Then they said to a man among them, "Feed us from what remains in your bag." So he got up and brought him some Barni dates. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is Barni. It is indeed among the best of your dates. It is a cure, with no harm in it."Abu Yaala (6850) and Tabarani in Mujam al-Kabir (345/20–346) both reported it, both through the hadith of Muhammad bin Sidran, who said, "Talib bin Hujayr Abdi narrated to us, Hud Asri narrated to us, from his grandfather." His grandfather is Muzayda Asri.Haythami said in Majma al-Zawaid (388/9), "Tabarani and Abu Yaala reported it, and their narrators are trustworthy, though some of them are disputed." I say, in its chain is Hud Asri, for whom no narrator besides Talib has been mentioned, and I have found no one who declared him trustworthy except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him among his trustworthy narrators. Hence Ibn Hajar said, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated. And I have found no corroboration for him.It was also reported from Jarud Abdi, who said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him, and I said to him, 'On condition that if I leave my religion and enter your religion, Allah will not punish me in the Hereafter.'" He said, "Yes."Abu Yaala (918) and Tabarani in Mujam al-Kabir (2/300) both reported it, both through the route of Ashath bin Sawwar, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Jarud Abdi, and he mentioned it.Haythami said in Majma al-Zawaid (32/1), "Abu Yaala reported it, and its narrators are trustworthy." I say, rather, in its chain is Ashath bin Sawwar, who is daif.
