I used to sit with Ibn Abbas, and he would seat me on his couch. He said to me, "Stay with me, and I will give you a share of my wealth." So I stayed with him for two months. Then he said, "When the delegation of Abdul-Qays came to the Prophet ﷺ, he asked, 'Who are these people?' or 'Who is the delegation?'They replied, 'We are from Rabia.'He said, 'Welcome to the people,' or 'to the delegation, neither disgraced nor regretful.'They said, 'Messenger of Allah, we are unable to come to you except during the sacred month, for between us and you stands this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar. So instruct us with a clear command that we may convey to those we left behind and by which we may enter Paradise.'They also asked him about drinks. He commanded them with four things and forbade them four things. He commanded them with faith in Allah alone, then said, 'Do you know what faith in Allah alone is?'They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'He said, 'It is the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, fasting Ramadan, and that you give one-fifth of the war spoils.'And he forbade them four things, the hantam, the dubba, the Naqi, and the muzaffat,' and perhaps he said, 'the muqayyar.' He said, 'Memorize these things and inform those you left behind of them.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Faith (53), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (17), both through the route of Shuba, from Abu Jamra, and he mentioned it. The wording given here is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar. Muslim added, in the narration of Qurra bin Khalid from Abu Jamra, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ashajj, the Ashajj of Abdul-Qays, "You have two traits that Allah loves, forbearance and deliberateness."His statement, "and the tarred one," refers to the pitched vessel, meaning the one coated with tar, which is pitch.Hafiz bin Kathir said, "The wording of Ibn Abbas's hadith indicates that the delegation of Abdul-Qays arrived before the conquest of Makkah, based on their saying, 'Between us and you lies this tribe of Mudar, so we cannot reach you except in a sacred month.'" Bidayah wa Nihayah (7/251).
