I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit with Hasan bin Ali beside him. He would turn to face the people once and turn to face Hasan another time, saying, "This son of mine is a master, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great factions of the Muslims."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Reconciliation (2704) from Abdullah bin Muhammad, "Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Musa, who said, I heard Hasan say, 'By Allah, Hasan bin Ali faced Muawiya with battalions like mountains. Amr bin As said, "I see battalions that will not retreat until they have killed their equals." Muawiya said to him, and by Allah he was the better of the two men, "Amr, if these kill those, and those kill these, who will look after the people's affairs, who will look after their women, who will look after their property?" So he sent to him two men from Quraysh, from Banu Abd Shams, Abdul-Rahman bin Samura and Abdullah bin Amir bin Kurayz, and said, "Go to this man, present the matter to him, speak to him, and make the request to him." So they came to him and entered upon him, spoke to him and made their request to him, but Hasan bin Ali said to them, "We are the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, we have already suffered losses from this wealth, and this nation has ravaged itself in bloodshed." They said, "He offers you such and such, and requests and asks of you." He said, "Then who will guarantee this for me?" They said, "We will guarantee it for you." Whatever he asked them, they said, "We will guarantee it for you." So he made peace with him.'"Hasan said, "I heard Abu Bakra say," and he mentioned it.Bukhari said, "Ali bin Abdullah said to me, Hasan's hearing from Abu Bakra is established for us only through this hadith."Something with the same meaning has been reported from Jabir, who said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about Hasan, "This son of mine is a master, and perhaps Allah will bring about reconciliation through him between two factions of the Muslims."Bazzar narrated it, Kashf Astar (2635), from Yusuf bin Musa, "Abdul-Rahman bin Mughra narrated to us, from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir," and he mentioned it.Bazzar said, "We do not know of it being narrated from Jabir except through this chain."I say, it is as he said, for Abdul-Rahman bin Mughra narrates hadiths from Amash that are not corroborated. Ali bin Madini said, "He is of no worth. He used to narrate six hundred hadiths from Amash which we abandoned, he was not up to standard." Ibn Adi said, "It is as Ali said. What was objected to in this Abu Zuhayr were hadiths he narrates from Amash that are not corroborated by reliable narrators, but he has narrations from other than Amash, and he is among the weak narrators whose hadith is written down."It appears from the statements of the scholars that he is daif in his narration from Amash, and truthful in his narration from other than Amash. Haythami faulted it on this basis in Majma (1/178), but without detail, saying, "It contains Abdul-Rahman bin Mughra, whom more than one scholar considered reliable, though there is weakness in him, and the rest of its narrators are narrators of the Sahih."This prophecy came true in the year forty-one, when Hasan bin Ali and Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan together reached a settlement that authority would belong to Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan. Then Muawiya entered Kufa and delivered a sermon to the people there after receiving the pledge of allegiance.
