There was an orphan girl in the care of Umm Sulaym, who was the mother of Anas. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the orphan girl and said, "Is that you? How you have grown! May your years not increase."The orphan girl returned to Umm Sulaym in tears.Umm Sulaym asked, "What is the matter, my dear daughter?"The girl replied, "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ supplicated against me, that my years would not increase. Now my years will never increase," or she said, "my lifespan."Umm Sulaym hurried out, adjusting her head covering as she went, until she met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "What is the matter, Umm Sulaym?"She said, "Prophet of Allah, did you supplicate against my orphan girl?"He asked, "What do you mean, Umm Sulaym?"She said, "She claims that you prayed that her years would not increase, nor would her lifespan."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and then said, "Umm Sulaym, do you not know the condition I made with my Lord? I stipulated with my Lord, saying, 'I am only a human being. I am pleased as humans are pleased, and I become angry as humans become angry. So whichever member of my community I supplicate against with a supplication they do not deserve, make it for them a means of purification, a means of growth, and a means of nearness by which You bring them close to You on the Day of Resurrection.'"
