He said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade cauterization. He disliked drinking very hot water, and when he applied kohl he would do so an odd number of times, and when he used stones for cleansing he would use an odd number.
قال نهى رسول الله ﷺ عن الكي، وكان يكره شرب الحميم، وكان إذا اكتحل اكتحل وترا، وإذا استجمر استجمر وترا.
Ahmad narrated it (17426) from Hasan, who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, Harith bin Yazid narrated to us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr, from Uqba bin Amir, and he mentioned it. He also narrated it through other paths from Ibn Lahia (17427, 17428). Tabarani also narrated it in al-Kabir (4/93) through another path from Abu Abdul-Rahman Muqri, from Ibn Lahia with his chain, in a shortened form. The narration of Muqri is more reliable than the others, and it strengthens what came before, showing that Ibn Lahia did not err in this hadith. With this, the hadith becomes hasan. His saying, "apply kohl in odd numbers," can be understood in two ways. The first is that one applies kohl an odd number of times to each eye separately. The second is that the total application of kohl to both eyes together should be odd, as in the hadith of Anas.It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said, the Prophet ﷺ used to apply kohl made of antimony every night before sleeping, applying it three times to each eye, though this is daif. It was narrated by Tirmidhi (1757), Ibn Majah (3499), Ibn Abu Shayba (23956), and Ahmad (3320, 3318), the wording being his. Hakim declared it sahih (4/408). All of them narrated it through the path of Abbad bin Mansur, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, who said, and he mentioned it. Its chain is daif because of Abbad bin Mansur, for he is daif in hadith and used to practice tadlis, and he did practice tadlis in this hadith, dropping two narrators between himself and Ikrima.Yahya Qattan said, I said to Abbad bin Mansur, "Did you hear the hadith 'I have not passed by any gathering of angels...' and that the Prophet ﷺ used to apply kohl three times," meaning from Ikrima? He said, "Ibn Abu Yahya narrated them to me, from Dawud, from Ikrima." End of quote.Ibn Abu Yahya is Ibrahim bin Muhammad Aslami, and he is a liar. Dawud is Dawud bin Husayn, who is daif specifically with regard to Ikrima. For this reason Ibn Hibban said, "Everything that Abbad narrated from Ikrima, he heard it from Ibrahim bin Abu Yahya, from Dawud bin Husayn, from him, and he concealed it through tadlis, presenting it as coming directly from Ikrima."
