The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah will single out a man from my nation before all creation on the Day of Resurrection. He will spread before him ninety-nine scrolls, each scroll stretching as far as the eye can see. Then He will ask, 'Do you deny any of this? Have My recording angels wronged you?'The man will reply, 'No, my Lord.'Allah will ask, 'Do you have any excuse?'He will reply, 'No, my Lord.'Allah will say, 'Indeed, you do have a good deed with Us, and you will not be wronged today.' Then a small card will be brought forth bearing the words, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.'Allah will say, 'Come and witness your weighing.'The man will say, 'My Lord, what is this single card against all these scrolls?'Allah will say, 'You will not be wronged.'The scrolls will be placed on one pan of the scale and the card on the other. The scrolls will rise up light, and the card will weigh heavy, for nothing outweighs the name of Allah."
Narrated by Tirmidhi (2639) - and this is his wording - and Ibn Majah (4300), both from the hadith of Layth bin Saad, who said, Amir bin Yahya told me, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Maafiri, then Hublee, who said, I heard Abdullah bin Amr bin As, and he related the hadith. Imam Ahmad (6994) also narrated it through this route, and Ibn Hibban (225) graded it sahih, as did Hakim (6/1), who said, "sahih in isnad." Tirmidhi said, "hasan gharib." I say, rather the correct view is that it is sahih, for its narrators are trustworthy. His statement, "so the registers became light," means they became light in weight. His statement, "a card" means a small slip of paper. His statement, "registers" is the plural of register, which is the large book.On this subject there is also a report from Suhayl bin Baydaa, who said, While we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I was riding behind him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Suhayl bin Baydaa," raising his voice two or three times, and each time Suhayl answered him. The people heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and thought he wanted them, so those ahead of him stopped, and those behind him caught up, until they had all gathered. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah, Allah forbids the Fire to him and guarantees him Paradise."This was narrated by Imam Ahmad (15738) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (6033), and Ibn Hibban (199) graded it sahih, as did Hakim (3/630), all of them by way of Ibn Hadi, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from Saeed bin Salt, from Suhayl bin Baydaa, who related the hadith. Its chain contains a break, for Saeed bin Salt did not meet Suhayl bin Baydaa, since Suhayl died during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year nine. For this reason Abu Hatim said, "It is mursal." Hakim passed over it in silence, while Dhahabi said, "Its chain is good, but it contains an omission (irsal)." Haythami mentioned it in Al-Majma (1/15) and said, "It was narrated by Ahmad and Tabarani in Al-Kabir, and its pivot is Saeed bin Salt. Ibn Abu Hatim said, It has been narrated from Suhayl bin Baydaa as mursal, and from Ibn Abbas as connected (mawsul)."His statement, "whoever says there is no god but Allah enters Paradise," means while believing in the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ, even if he is unable to speak in his final moment. This is unlike the disbeliever, for if he were to say there is no god but Allah, he would not be among the people of Paradise, because he denied the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ during his lifetime. This is indicated by the statement of the Prophet ﷺ, "If Musa were alive, it would not be permissible for him except to follow me," meaning that the mere utterance of "there is no god but Allah" is not accepted from him, but rather faith in the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ is indispensable.
