Ayesha said, "There was no woman I would have rather been in the place of than Sawda bint Zama, a woman of fiery temperament. When she grew older, she gave her day with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to me."She said, "Messenger of Allah, I have given my day with you to Ayesha."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to allot Ayesha two days, her own day and Sawda's day.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Suckling (1463:47) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Jareer told us, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it as mentioned. He also narrated it (1463:48) through Uqba bin Khalid, Zuhayr, and Sharik, all of them from Hisham with this same chain, that when Sawda grew old, in the sense of Jareer's hadith. Muslim said, and in Sharik's hadith he added, She said, "And she was the first woman he married after me."Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5212) from Malik bin Ismail, from Zuhayr, from Hisham, in abbreviated form.I say, Sharik is Ibn Abdullah Nakhai, whose memory declined after he took up the judgeship in Kufa. He was just, virtuous, devout, and harsh toward the people of innovation, and this is among what he retained correctly from Hisham bin Urwa, because the marriage contract with Ayesha preceded the marriage contract with Sawda, which is the view of the majority of scholars, apart from a few who differ. However, his ﷺ consummation of marriage with Sawda took place in Makkah, while his consummation of marriage with Ayesha was delayed until Madinah, because Khawla bint Hakeem, the wife of Uthman bin Mazun, said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you not marry?" He said, "Whom?" She said, "If you wish, a virgin, and if you wish, a previously married woman." He said, "Who is the virgin?" She said, "The daughter of the most beloved of Allah's creatures to you, Ayesha, daughter of Abu Bakr." He said, "And who is the previously married woman?" She said, "Sawda bint Zama, who has believed in you and followed you in what you say." And she related the hadith in full as mentioned in the Book of Marriage. This indicates that the marriage contract with Ayesha came first, and this is what Ayesha alludes to in Sharik's narration. Her husband before him had been Sakran bin Amr, the brother of Suhayl bin Amr, who was among those who embraced Islam and emigrated to Abyssinia, then returned to Makkah and died there before the Hijrah. She
died toward the end of the caliphate of Umar bin Khattab, though other accounts have also been given. See al-Isabah (11495).
