Salim bin Ubayd reported,

Salim bin Ubayd reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill and lost consciousness. When he came to, he asked, "Has the time for prayer come?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Then he lost consciousness again. When he came to, he asked, "Has the time for prayer come?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Then he lost consciousness again. Ayesha said, "My father is a tender-hearted man. Perhaps you could order someone else."Then he came to and asked, "Has the iqamah been called?"They said, "No."He said, "Tell Bilal to call the iqamah, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha said, "My father is a tender-hearted man. Perhaps you could order someone else."He said, "You are like the women who tried to influence Yusuf. Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."So Bilal called the iqamah and Abu Bakr stepped forward. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regained consciousness and said, "Find someone for me to lean on."He came out leaning on Barirah and another person until he sat down beside Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ held him in place, so Abu Bakr led the people in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Umar said, "I will not hear anyone say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died without striking him with my sword."Salim bin Ubayd said, They sent me and told me, "Go to the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and summon him."I came to Abu Bakr while he was in the mosque, and I was deeply distressed. Abu Bakr said to me, "Perhaps the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died?"I said, "Umar is saying, 'I will not hear anyone say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died without striking him with my sword.'"Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه stood up, took me by the arm, and we came together. He said, "Make way for me."They made way for him, and he leaned over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, touched him, and placed his hands, or his hand, on him, then said, "Indeed you will die, and they too will die."He then said, "Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died?"He replied, "Yes."So they knew that it was just as he had said. They were unlettered people, with no prophet among them before him. They said, "Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, shall we pray over him?"He said, "Yes."They said, "How shall we pray over him?"He said, "A group will enter, say the takbir, pray, and supplicate, then leave. Then another group will enter, until everyone has finished."They said, "Companion of the Messenger of Allah, shall he be buried?"He said, "Yes."They said, "Where shall he be buried?"He said, "In the place where his soul was taken, for his soul was taken in none but a pure place."So they knew that it was just as he had said. Then he went out and ordered that the men of his father's family wash him. Then he went out, and the Muhajirun gathered together to consult. They said, "The Ansar have a share in this matter."So they came to them, and one of them said, "From us a leader and from you a leader."Umar stood and said to them, "Who has three things like Abu Bakr has? He was the second of two when they were in the cave. Who were the two when he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us'? Who were the two with whom Allah, mighty and exalted, was?"Then he took Abu Bakr by the hand and pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance, and it was a fine and beautiful pledge.
