The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained for nine years without performing Hajj. Then in the tenth year, he announced to the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would be performing Hajj. A great many people came to Madinah, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did. And he mentioned the hadith in its full length.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1218) through several chains from Hatim bin Ismail Madani, from Jafar bin Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn bin Ali bin Abu Talib, from his father, who said, I went in to see Jabir bin Abdullah, and I said, "Tell me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So he mentioned it.It was named the Farewell Hajj because he ﷺ bade the people farewell during it, saying to them, "Take your rites of pilgrimage from me, for I may not meet you again after this year of mine." Allah completed this religion which He chose for the people during the Farewell Hajj. Allah, the Exalted, said, "This day I have completed for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion" [Maidah 5:3].
