Ali, while he was in Yemen, sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a piece of gold still in its ore. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it among four men, Aqra bin Habis al-Hanzali, Uyayna bin Badr al-Fazari, Alqama bin Ulatha al-Amiri who was from Banu Kilab, and Zayd al-Khayl al-Tai who was from Banu Nabhan.Quraysh became angry and said, "Do you give to the chiefs of Najd and leave us out?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did so only to win their hearts."Then a man came forward with a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, deep-set eyes, a bulging forehead, and a shaved head. He said, "Fear Allah, Muhammad."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? He trusts me with the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me?"The man then turned away, and one of the men present asked permission to kill him. They thought it was Khalid bin Walid. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "From the offspring of this man will come a people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will kill the people of Islam and spare the people of idols. They will pass through Islam as an arrow passes through its prey. If I were to live until I met them, I would slaughter them as the people of Aad were slaughtered."
Bukhari narrated it in Tawheed (7432), and Muslim in Zakat (1064: 143), both through Saeed bin Masruq, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Naim, who said, I heard Abu Saeed Khudri say, and he related it.
