Asim bin Umar bin Qatada reported,

I asked Mahmud, "Did people recognize the hypocrites among them?"He replied, "Yes, by Allah, a man would recognize it in his brother, his father, his uncle, and within his clan, yet they would conceal it from one another."Then Mahmud said, "Some men from my tribe told me about a man whose hypocrisy was well known. He was traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wherever he went. When the incident at al-Hijr occurred with the people and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his supplication, Allah sent a cloud which rained until the people had drunk their fill. They said, 'We turned to him and said, Woe to you, is there anything left after this?' He replied, 'It was just a passing cloud.'"Ibn Ishaq said, Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued on, and at some point along the way his she-camel went missing. His companions went out searching for her. With the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one of his companions named Umara bin Hazm, who had been present at al-Aqaba and at Badr, and he was the uncle of the sons of Amr bin Hazm. In his traveling party was Zayd bin al-Lusayt al-Qaynuqai, who was a hypocrite.Ibn Ishaq said, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada narrated to me from Mahmud bin Labeed, from some men of Banu Abd al-Ashhal, who said, Zayd bin al-Lusayt, while in Umara's traveling party and while Umara was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said, "Does Muhammad not claim to be a prophet and inform you of news from the heavens, yet he does not know where his own she-camel is?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with Umara beside him, said, "A man has said, 'Here is Muhammad telling you he is a prophet and claiming to inform you of matters of the heavens, yet he does not know where his she-camel is.' By Allah, I know only what Allah teaches me, and Allah has now shown me where she is. She is in this valley, in such-and-such ravine. A tree has caught her by her halter. Go and bring her to me."So they went and brought her back. Umara bin Hazm returned to his traveling party and said, "By Allah, what an astonishing thing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just told us, about the words of a speaker whom Allah informed him of, saying such-and-such," repeating what Zayd bin Lusayt had said.A man who had been in Umara's traveling party but had not been present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, Zayd said those very words before you arrived."Umara turned on Zayd, striking his neck and saying, "Servants of Allah, there has been a calamity in my baggage and I did not know it. Get out of my company, enemy of Allah, and do not travel with me."
