There was a dispute between Hudhayfa and one of the people of al-Aqaba, the kind of disagreement that happens between people. The man said, "I adjure you by Allah, how many were the people of al-Aqaba?"The people said to Hudhayfa, "Tell him, since he has asked you."Hudhayfa said, "We were told they were fourteen. If you were one of them, then they were fifteen. I bear witness by Allah that twelve of them are at war with Allah and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand. As for three, they were excused. They said, 'We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor did we know what the group intended.'"He had been in a stony tract and was walking when he said, "The water is scarce, so let no one reach it before me." But he found that some people had gotten there before him, so he cursed them on that day.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on the characteristics of the hypocrites (11:2997), from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Abu Ahmad Kufi narrated to us, who said, Walid bin Jami narrated to us, who said, Abu Tufayl narrated to us, and he mentioned it.Nawawi said, This pass is not the well-known pass at Mina where the pledge of the Ansar took place . Rather, it is a pass on the road to Tabuk, where the hypocrites gathered to treacherously attack the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the campaign of Tabuk, but Allah protected him from them. End of quote.I say, the following narration makes this even clearer.
