Uthman bin Affan came to the Prophet ﷺ with a thousand Dinars carried in his garment when the Prophet ﷺ was equipping the Army of Hardship. He poured them into the lap of the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ began turning them over with his hand, saying, "Nothing Ibn Affan does after this day will harm him." He repeated this several times.
It was narrated by Tirmidhi (3701), Ahmad (20630), Ibn Abu Asim in al-Jihad (82), and Hakim (3/102), all of them from the hadith of Damra bin Rabia, from Abdullah bin Shawzab, from Abdullah bin Qasim, from Kathir the freedman of Abdul-Rahman bin Samura, from Abdul-Rahman bin Samura, who narrated it.Its chain is hasan because of Kathir bin Abu Kathir, the freedman of Ibn Samura, for he is hasan al-hadith. A good number of people narrated from him, and Ajli and Ibn Hibban both deemed him trustworthy. Its basic content is established in the Sahih. It was also narrated on the authority of Abdul-Rahman bin Khabab Sulami, who said, "The Messenger of Allah went out and urged people to contribute to the army facing hardship. Uthman bin Affan said, 'I will provide a hundred camels with their saddle-cloths and saddle-pads.' He said, then the Prophet urged again, and Uthman said, 'I will provide another hundred with their saddle-cloths and saddle-pads.' He said, then the Prophet came down one step from the pulpit and urged again, and Uthman bin Affan said, 'I will provide yet another hundred with their saddle-cloths and saddle-pads.' He said, then I saw the Prophet gesturing with his hand like this, moving it" - and Abdul-Samad extended his hand as if in amazement - "'There is nothing against Uthman for whatever he does after this.'"This was narrated by Abdullah bin Ahmad in the Musnad of his father (16696), from Abu Musa Anazi, who said, Abdul-Samad bin Abdul-Warith told us, who said, Sakan bin Mughira told me, who said, Walid bin Abu Hisham told me, from Farqad Abu Talha, from Abdul-Rahman bin Khabab Sulami, who narrated it.It was also narrated by Tirmidhi (3700) and Ibn Humayd (300), both of them from Abu Dawud Tayalisi - and it is also in his Musnad (1189) - from Sakan bin Mughira with his chain of transmission, in similar wording.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hadith that is unusual by this route. We do not know it except through the hadith of Sakan bin Mughira."I say, it is as he said. Sakan bin Mughira is hasan al-hadith, but the chain contains Farqad Abu Talha, who is "unknown." Ali bin Madini said, "I do not know him," and Walid bin Abu Hisham was the only one to narrate from him.
