I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn when the delegations of Hawazin came to him and said, "Muhammad, we are of one stock and kin. Show us favor, may Allah show favor to you. Hardship has befallen us as is not hidden from you."He said, "Choose between your women, your wealth, and your children."They said, "You have given us a choice between our honor and our wealth. We choose our children."He said, "As for what belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, it is yours. When I have prayed the noon prayer, say, 'We seek the intercession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the believers, and the intercession of the believers with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for our women and our children.'"So they did, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for what belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, it is yours."The Muhajirun said, "Whatever belongs to us belongs to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," and the Ansar said the same.Uyayna bin Badr said, "As for what belongs to me and the sons of Fazara, no."Aqra bin Habis said, "As for me and the sons of Tamim, no."Abbas bin Mirdas said, "As for me and the sons of Sulaym, no."The two clans said to them, "You have lied. It belongs to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "People, return to them their women and their children. Whoever holds onto anything of the spoils, he is entitled from us to six shares from the first spoils that Allah grants us."Then he mounted his riding camel, and the people clung to him, saying, "Distribute our share of the spoils among us," until they pressed him against an acacia tree which snatched away his cloak. He said, "People, give me back my cloak. By Allah, if you had as many livestock as the trees of Tihama, I would have divided them among you. You will not find me miserly, cowardly, or a liar."Then he approached his camel, took a tuft of hair from its hump, placed it between his index and middle fingers, raised it up and said, "People, I have no share of this booty, not even this much, except for the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So return even the needle and the thread, for misappropriation of spoils will be a disgrace, a fire, and a shame upon those who do it on the Day of Resurrection."A man stood up holding a ball of hair and said, "I took this to repair the saddle pad of a camel of mine that has a sore back."He said, "As for what belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, it is yours."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, since the matter has reached what I now see, I have no need of it," and he tossed it away.
Narrated by Nasai (3688), Abu Dawud (2694), Ahmad (7037), and Bayhaqi (6/336), all from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Amr bin Shuayb narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, and he mentioned it. Some of them abridged it. It is found in Sirat bin Hisham (2/489). Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq and his teacher Amr bin Shuayb.Zuhri said, Ibn Musayab informed me that on that day they captured six thousand of the captives, and they later came as Muslims. Ibn Saad mentioned this in al-Tabaqat (2/155).As for what was narrated from Abu Jarwal Zuhayr bin Surad al-Jushami, who said, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took us captive on the day of Hunayn, the day of Hawazin, and he went to distribute the captive women and children, I recited to him this poem,Show us favor, Messenger of Allah, out of nobility, for you are the man in whom we hope and expect.Show favor upon a tribe whose fate has held it back, scattering its unity in its time.Fate has left us nothing but constant grief, sorrow weighing upon hearts already burdened and drowned. If you do not follow it with blessings to spread among them, O most balanced of people in patience when tested,Show favor upon women whom you once nursed, and when what you did and refrained from adorned you.Do not make us like one whose ostrich has fled, so spare us, for we are a radiant people. We are grateful for blessings even when we once disbelieved, and we still have something held in reserve after this day.So clothe with pardon the one whom you were nursed by, among your mothers, for pardon is well known.O best of those who ever rode a bay-colored horse with white markings amid the fray, when the sparks of battle are kindled,We hope for a pardon from you that we may wear, guide of creation, guide of creation, when you pardon and when you triumph. So pardon, may Allah pardon you for what you fear on the Day of Judgment, when victory is granted to you. When he heard this poem, he said, "Whatever belongs to me and to Banu Abdul-Muttalib is yours." Quraysh said, "Whatever belongs to us is Allah's and His Messenger's." And the Ansar said, "Whatever belongs to us is Allah's and His Messenger's."So it is daif. It was narrated by Tabarani in al-Kabir (5/311–312) from Ubaydullah bin Ramahis al-Jushami, who said, Abu Amr Ziyad bin Tariq narrated to us, and he had lived for one hundred and twenty years, he said, I heard Abu Jarwal Zuhayr bin Surad al-Jushami say, and he mentioned it.Haythami said in al-Majmaa (6/187), Tabarani narrated it in al-Thalathah, and it contains narrators whom I do not recognize. I say, by this he means Ubaydullah bin Ramahis, Tabarani's teacher, and Ziyad bin Tariq.Ubaydullah bin Ramahis al-Qaysi al-Ramli was mentioned by Dhahabi in al-Mizan (6/3), where he said, "The Amir Badr al-Hammami narrated from him, as did Abu Qasim al-Tabarani, Ahmad bin Ismail bin Aasim, Abu Saeed bin al-Arabi, Hasan bin Zayd al-Jafari, and Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Isa al-Maqdisi. He lived a long life. I have not seen any criticism of him from the earlier scholars, yet he is not to be relied upon. Then I found that the hadith he narrated (meaning this hadith) has a serious defect."Abu Umar Ibn Abdul-Barr said, regarding the poem of Zuhayr, "It was narrated by Ubaydullah bin Ramahis, from Ziyad bin Tariq, from Ziyad bin Surad bin Zuhayr, from his father, from his grandfather Zuhayr bin Surad. Ubaydullah took the chain of transmission and dropped two men from it, and was not content with that until he explicitly stated that Ziyad bin Tariq said, Zuhayr narrated to me, this is how it appears in Tabarani's Mujam and elsewhere, with two links of its chain omitted."I say, if this statement is correct, then Ubaydullah bin Ramahis is suspected of fabrication, while Ziyad bin Tariq is unknown.
