He said to the Prophet ﷺ, "What benefit have you brought to your uncle, since he used to protect you and become angry on your behalf?"He replied, "He is in a shallow pool of fire. Were it not for me, he would be in the lowest depths of the Fire."
أنه قال للنبي ﷺ: ما أغنيت عن عمك، فإنه كان يحوطك ويغضب لك؟ قال: هو في ضحضاح من نار، ولولا أنا لكان في الدرك الأسفل من النار.
Bukhari narrated it in Manaqib (3883), and Muslim in Iman (209), both from the hadith of Yahya bin Saeed, from Sufyan, "Abdul-Malik bin Umayr told us, Abdullah bin Harith told us, Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib told us," and he related it.In a version recorded by Muslim through the narration of Ibn Abu Umar, from Sufyan, with his chain, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Abu Talib used to protect you and support you, so did that benefit him?' He said, 'Yes, I found him in the depths of the Fire, and I brought him out to a shallow part of it.'"
