Abbas reported, "I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn. Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib and I stayed close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not leave him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was riding a white mule that had been given to him as a gift by Farwa bin Nufatha al-Judhami.When the Muslims and the disbelievers met in battle, the Muslims turned and fled. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began urging his mule forward toward the disbelievers. I was holding the bridle of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ mule, restraining it so it would not move too quickly, while Abu Sufyan was holding the stirrup of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abbas, call out to the Companions of the Samura tree."Abbas continued, "I was a man with a powerful voice, so I called out at the top of my voice, 'Where are the Companions of the Samura tree?' By Allah, when they heard my voice, their response was like that of cows turning back to their calves. They cried, 'At your service! At your service!'Then they engaged the disbelievers in battle. The call went out among the Ansar, 'Company of the Ansar! Company of the Ansar!' Then the call was narrowed to the Banu Harith bin Khazraj, 'Sons of Harith bin Khazraj! Sons of Harith bin Khazraj!'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, on his mule, leaned forward as if straining to watch the fighting, and said, 'Now the furnace has grown hot.'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took some pebbles and threw them at the faces of the disbelievers, saying, 'They are defeated, by the Lord of Muhammad!'I went to look, and the fighting still appeared to me to be as it had been. But by Allah, no sooner had he thrown those pebbles at them than I continued to see their force weakening and their cause turned in retreat."
شهدت مع رسول الله ﷺ يوم حنين فلزمت أنا وأبو سفيان بن الحارث بن عبد المطلب رسول الله ﷺ فلم نفارقه، ورسول الله ﷺ على بغلة له بيضاء، أهداها له فروة بن نفاثة الجذامي، فلما التقى المسلمون والكفار، ولى المسلمون مدبرين فطفق رسول الله ﷺ يركض بغلته قبل الكفار، قال عباس: وأنا آخذ بلجام بغلة رسول الله ﷺ أكفها إرادة أن لا تسرع، وأبو سفيان آخذ بركاب رسول الله ﷺ، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أي عباس ناد أصحاب السمرة. فقال عباس: وكان رجلا صيتا فقلت بأعلى صوتي: أين أصحاب السمرة؟ قال: فو الله لكأن عطفتهم، حين سمعوا صوتي عطفة البقر على أولادها. فقالوا يا لبيك يا لبيك- قال: فاقتتلوا والكفار والدعوة في الأنصار، يقولون: يا معشر الأنصار يا معشر الأنصار! قال: ثم قصرت الدعوة على بني الحارث ابن الخزرج فقالوا: يا بني الحارث بن الخزرج! يا بني الحارث بن الخزرج! فنظر رسول الله ﷺ وهو على بغلته كالمتطاول عليها إلى قتالهم، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: هذا حين حمي الوطيس. قال: ثم أخذ رسول الله ﷺ حصيات فرمي بهن وجوه الكفار ثم قال: انهزموا ورب محمد قال: فذهبت أنظر فإذا القتال على هيئته فيما أرى- قال: - فوالله! ما هو إلا أن رماهم بحصياته فما زلت أرى حدهم كليلا وأمرهم مدبرا.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (76:1775) from Abu Tahir Ahmad bin Amr bin Sarh, who said, Ibn Wahb told us, Yunus told me, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Kathir bin Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib told me, saying, Abbas said, and then he related the hadith. His words "the companions of Samura" refer to the tree under which they gave the pledge of Ridwan.Muslim also said, Ishaq bin Ibrahim, Muhammad bin Rafi, and Abd bin Humayd all narrated it to us from Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Mamar told us, from Zuhri, with this same chain, in a similar wording, except that he said "Farwa bin Numa Judhami," and he said, "They have been routed, by the Lord of the Kaaba, they have been routed, by the Lord of the Kaaba," and he added in the hadith, "until Allah routed them." He said, "And it is as if I can see the Prophet ﷺ galloping after them on his mule."His words "on a white mule of his" appear in another version as "on his gray mule," and these refer to the same animal. The scholars said that he is not known to have had any other mule besides this one, which was called Duldul.His words, "I kept seeing their sharpness blunted," meaning I kept seeing their strength weakened.His words, "which Farwa bin Nifatha had given him as a gift," while another version says "Farwa bin Numa." Nawawi said that the first is the correct and well known version.And his words "the companions of Samura" refer to the tree under which they gave the pledge of Ridwan.
