He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in the year of the Conquest, while he was in Makkah, "Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, dead animals, swine, and idols."Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, what about the fat of dead animals? It is used to coat ships, to grease leather, and people use it for lamps."He replied, "No, it is forbidden."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ added, "May Allah destroy the Jews. When Allah forbade them the fat of dead animals, they melted it down, sold it, and consumed its price."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Sales (2236), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Musaqah (1581), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, "Layth narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Ata bin Abu Rabah, from Jabir bin Abdullah," and he mentioned it.
