My foster father, who had nursed me, related to me, "Then Thabit bin Aqram, the brother of Banu Ajlan, took up the banner and said, 'Muslims, agree upon one of you to lead.'They said, 'You.'He replied, 'I will not do it.'So the people agreed upon Khalid bin Walid. When he took the banner, he held off the enemy, kept them at bay, then withdrew, and they withdrew from him, until he led the people back."

Ibn Ishaq narrated it, saying, Yahya bin Abbad bin Abdullah bin Zubayr told me, from his father Abbad, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq. The scholars of military campaigns differed over their flight and withdrawal, whether it was a defeat for the Muslims or a ruse against the polytheists. The majority of scholars, including Zuhri, Musa bin Uqba, Waqidi, Bayhaqi, and others, held that it was a ruse against the polytheists and a victory for the Muslims. The hadith of Anas in the Sahih, in its wording, "so it was opened for him," supports this. It is also supported by the statement of Khalid bin Walid that nine swords broke in his hand, which points to fierce fighting on the part of the Muslims.Ibn Hisham said, As for Zuhri, in what has reached us from him he said, The Muslims placed Khalid bin Walid in command over them, and Allah granted them victory.
