Abbad bin Abdullah bin Zubayr reported,

My foster father, who nursed me and was one of the Banu Mura bin Awf, said, "When Jafar was killed, Abdullah bin Rawaha took up the banner and advanced with it while mounted on his horse. He began urging himself forward, hesitating somewhat, then he said,'I swear, my soul, you shall come down to it, you shall come down to it, you shall come down willingly or be forced down. When the people raise their war cries and the clamor intensifies, why do I see you averse to Paradise? Long have you been at ease. Are you anything but a drop of fluid in a worn waterskin?'He also said,'My soul, if you are not killed, you will die all the same. This is the fate of death and it has come upon you. What you wished for has been granted to you. If you do as those two did, you have been guided.'By 'those two' he meant his companions Zayd and Jafar. Then he dismounted. When he had dismounted, a cousin of his came to him with a piece of meat on a bone and said, 'Strengthen yourself with this, for you have endured much in these days of yours.' He took it from his hand and bit off a morsel, then he heard the clash of battle on one side of the army and said, 'And you are still in this world!' He threw the meat from his hand, took up his sword, advanced, and fought until he was killed."

عن عباد بن عبد الله بن الزبير قال

حدثني أبي الذي أرضعني، وكان أحد بني مرة بن عوف قال: فلما قتل جعفر أخذ عبد الله بن رواحة الراية، ثم تقدم بها، وهو على فرسه، فجعل يستنزل نفسه ويترد بعض التردد ثم قال: أقسمت يا نفس لتنزلنه لتنزلنه لتنزلن أو لتكرهنه إن أجلب الناس وشدوا الرنة مالي أراك تكرهين الجنة قد طال ما قد كنت مطمئنه هل أنت إلا نطفة في شنه وقال أيضا: يا نفس إلا تقتلي تموتي هذا حمام الموت قد صليت وما تمنيت فقد أعطيت إن تفعلي فعلهما هديت يريد صاحبيه: زيدا وجعفر، ثم نزل، فلما نزل أتاه ابن عم له بعرق من لحم فقال: شد بها صلبك، فإنك قد لقيت في أيامك هذه ما لقيت، فأخذه من يده ثم انتهس منه نهسة، ثم سمع الحطمة في ناحية الناس، فقال: وأنت في الدنيا! ثم ألقاه من يده، ثم أخذه سيفه فتقدم، فقاتل حتى قتل.
