Awf bin Malik reported,

Awf bin Malik reported, "I went out with the Muslims who joined Zayd bin Haritha on the expedition of Mutah. A reinforcement fighter from Yemen accompanied me, carrying nothing but his sword. One of the Muslims slaughtered a camel, and the Yemeni man asked him for a piece of its hide. The man gave it to him, and he fashioned it into something like a small shield. We continued on and met the Byzantine forces. Among them was a man on a chestnut horse, with a gilded saddle and gilded weapons. This Byzantine fighter began harassing the Muslims. The Yemeni reinforcement lay in wait for him behind a rock, and when the Byzantine passed by, he hamstrung his horse. The man fell, and the Yemeni pounced on him and killed him, then took possession of his horse and weapons. When Allah granted the Muslims victory, Khalid bin Walid sent for him and took the spoils from him."Awf continued, "I went to Khalid and said, 'Khalid, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the spoils belong to the killer?'He replied, 'Yes, but I considered it too much for him.'I said, 'You will return it to him, or I will surely make this known to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'But he refused to return it."Awf continued, "We then gathered before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I told him the story of the Yemeni reinforcement and what Khalid had done. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Khalid, what made you do what you did?'He answered, 'Messenger of Allah, I considered it too much for him.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Khalid, return to him what you took from him.'"Awf continued, "I said, 'There you go, Khalid. Did I not make good on my word to you?'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'What is this?'So I informed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said, 'Khalid, do not return it to him. Will you not leave my commanders alone for me? You get the choicest part of their service, while they bear its burdens.'"Walid said, "I asked Thawr about this hadith, and he narrated it to me from Khalid bin Madan, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Awf bin Malik al-Ashjai, in similar wording."
