We continued to refrain from seeking forgiveness for those who committed major sins until we heard from the mouth of our Prophet ﷺ saying, "Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whomever He wills. I have reserved my intercession for those of my nation who committed major sins on the Day of Resurrection."So we held back from much of what had been in our hearts.
Narrated by Abu Yaala (5813), Tabarani in Awsat, Majma Bahrayn (4809), and Ibn Abu Asim in Sunnah (830), all through the route of Shayban bin Farroukh Abili, who said, Harb bin Shurayh Minqari told us, Ayub Sakhtiyani told us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he related it.Its chain is hasan due to the discussion surrounding Harb bin Shurayh. Bukhari, Ibn Hibban, and Abu Hatim criticized him, while Ahmad, Ibn Main, Daraqutni, Ibn Adi, and others considered him acceptable, and his hadith is hasan. Haythami in "Majma" (5/7) relied on the assessment of those who validated him, saying, "Abu Yaala narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the sahih, apart from Harb bin Siraj, who is trustworthy."It has also been narrated from him through another chain with the wording, "My intercession on the Day of Resurrection is for the people of major sins among my nation." Dhahabi mentioned this in "Mizan" (2/314) in the biography of Siddiq bin Saeed Sawnakhi Turki, from Muhammad bin Nasr Marwazi, from Yahya, from Malik, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he related it. Dhahabi said, "This was never narrated by these men at all. Rather, it was narrated from Siddiq by someone whose condition is unknown, namely Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Muhammad Zayni, and I do not know who fabricated it." End of quote.I say, Khatib extracted it through this same route in Tarikh Baghdad (11/8) in the biography of Husayn bin Ahmad bin Salama Asadi, the judge, Abu Abdullah. Khatib said, I read in the handwritten book of Ali bin Muhammad Nuaymi, the judge Abu Abdullah Husayn bin Ahmad bin Salama Asadi Maliki told me, in Baghdad, Abu Husayn Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Muhammad Zayni Basri told us, in a village of the district of Asfihan, Siddiq bin Saeed Sawnakhi told us, with his chain, similarly. On this subject there is also a report from Abu Darda, attributed to the Prophet, "My intercession is for the people of sins among my nation." Abu Darda said, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes, even if he commits adultery and even if he steals, despite Abu Darda's objection."Khatib narrated it in "Tarikh Baghdad" (1/416), in the biography of Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Yazid Tarsusi, Abu Fath, known as Ibn Basri, from Azhari and the judge Abu Ala Muhammad bin Ali, who both said, Abu Fath Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Yazid Tarsusi informed us, saying, Hasan bin Abdul-Rahman bin Zurayq told us, in Hims, saying, Muhammad bin Sinan Shirazi told us, saying, Ibrahim bin Hayan bin Talha told us, saying, Shuba told us, from Hakam, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla, from Abu Darda, and he related it.Its chain is daif, for Muhammad bin Sinan Shirazi is described in "Mizan" (3/575) as, "A man with fabricated reports." Also present is the judge Abu Ala Muhammad bin Ali Wasiti, the Quran reciter, who is daif and confused in his narrations, and the chain contains men who are unknown. However, Bazzar narrated it, in "Kashf" (5), through another route in an abbreviated form, with the wording, "Whoever dies without associating any partner with Allah enters Paradise." I said, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals?" He said, "Even despite Abu Darda's objection."Bazzar said, "This has been narrated from Abu Dharr and Abu Darda, and this is the best chain for the hadith of Abu Darda, because Hasan is well known as Kufan, and Zayd is trustworthy."I say, the hadith of Abu Darda was narrated by Imam Ahmad (27561) at length, from Hasan, who said, Ibn Lahia told us, from Wahib bin Abdullah, that Abu Darda said, the Messenger of Allah said, "Whoever says, there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, enters Paradise." He said, I asked, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals?" He said, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals." I asked, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals?" He said, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals." I asked, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals?" He said, "Even if he commits adultery and even if he steals, despite Abu Darda's objection."He said, so I went out to proclaim it among the people. Then Umar met me and said, "Go back, for if the people learn of this, they will rely on it alone." So I went back and informed him ﷺ, and he ﷺ said, "Umar has spoken truly."This chain contains Ibn Lahia, about whom there is well known discussion. Perhaps Haythami was referring to this in "Majma" (16/1) when he said, "Ahmad, Bazzar, and Tabarani in 'Kabir' and 'Awsat' narrated it, and Ahmad's chain is sahih, though it contains Ibn Lahia, whom more than one scholar relied upon."I say, but this hadith which Imam Ahmad narrated is known to actually belong to the sahih hadith of Abu Dharr, which has already passed in the Book of Faith, and will also come again in the Book on the Description of Paradise.Likewise, what is reported from Ali bin Abu Talib, attributed to the Prophet, is not sound, "My intercession for my nation is for whoever loves the people of my household, and they are my Shia." Khatib narrated it in Tarikh Baghdad (2/146) through the route of Qasim bin Jafar bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Ali bin Abu Talib, who said, my father told me, from his father, from his grandfather Muhammad bin Umar, from his father Umar bin Ali, from his father Ali bin Abu Talib, and he related it.Khatib said, "Qasim bin Jafar came to Baghdad and narrated there from his father, from his grandfather, from his forefathers a collection, most of which contains fabricated reports." Dhahabi relied on Khatib's statement and mentioned it in Mizan (3/369) without adding anything further. On this subject there is also a report from Salman Farsi, who said, they will come to the Prophet ﷺ and say, "O Prophet of Allah, you are the one through whom Allah opened, and through whom he sealed, and for whom he forgave what came before of your sin and what came after. Rise and intercede for us with your Lord." He will say, "Yes, I am your man." So he will go forth, moving through the Fire, until he reaches the gate of Paradise. He will take hold of the rings on the gate, made of gold, and knock on the gate. It will be said, "Who is this?" It will be said, "Muhammad." He said, so it will be opened for him. He said, so he will come until he stands before Allah, and he will ask permission to prostrate, and permission will be granted to him. He said, so Allah will open for him praise, glorification, and exaltation such as he has not opened for anyone else among creation. And it will be called out, "O Muhammad, raise your head, ask and you shall be given, call and you shall be answered." He said, so he will raise his head and say, "My Lord, my nation, my nation." Then he will ask permission to prostrate again, and permission will be granted to him, and he will be opened praise, glorification, and exaltation such as has not been opened for anyone else among creation. And it will be called out, "O Muhammad, raise your head, ask and you shall be given, intercede and your intercession shall be accepted, call and you shall be answered." He said, this will happen twice or three times, and he will intercede for whoever had in his heart the weight of a grain of wheat, or the weight of a barley seed, or the weight of a mustard seed of faith.Salman said, that is the Praised Station.Ibn Khuzayma narrated it in Tawhid (596), and this is his wording, as did Ibn Abu Asim in Sunnah (813), and Tabarani in Kabir (6/303-304), though he abbreviated it. All of them through the route of Abu Muawiya, who said, Asim Ahwal told us, from Abu Uthman Nahdi, from Salman. Its chain is sahih, except that it is a report attributed only to Salman himself, not to the Prophet.
