When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, Hajjaj bin Ilat said, "Messenger of Allah, I have wealth in Mecca and family there, and I would like to go to them. Do I have your permission to say something against you or speak ill of you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission to say whatever he wished. When he arrived in Mecca, he came to his wife and said, "Gather together whatever you have with you, for I want to buy from the spoils taken from Muhammad and his companions. Their forces have been overrun and their wealth seized."This news spread through Mecca. The Muslims there were crushed, while the polytheists openly displayed joy and delight. The news reached Abbas, who was so stunned that he could not stand up.Muamar said, Uthman al-Jazari informed me from Miqsam, who said, He took up his young son named Qutham, lay back, and placed him on his chest, saying:My beloved Qutham, resembling the one with the noble nose, The Prophet possessed of blessings, despite what some claim.Thabit reported from Anas, Then Abbas sent a servant of his to Hajjaj bin Ilat, saying, "Woe to you. What is this you have brought, and what are you saying? What Allah has promised is better than what you have brought."Hajjaj bin Ilat said to the servant, "Convey my greetings to Abu al-Fadl and tell him to clear one of his rooms so I can come to him, for the news is what will please him."The servant came back, and when he reached the door of the house he called out, "Good news, Abu al-Fadl!" Abbas leapt up with joy and kissed him between the eyes. The servant told him what Hajjaj had said, and Abbas freed him. Then Hajjaj came to him and informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had conquered Khaybar, taken their wealth as booty, and that Allah's allotted shares had been distributed among their wealth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had chosen Safiya bint Huyayy for himself and given her the choice between being freed and becoming his wife, or rejoining her people. She chose that he free her and become his wife.Hajjaj continued, "But I came to collect some wealth I had here, intending to gather it and take it away. I asked permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he allowed me to say whatever I wished. So conceal this from people for three days, then say whatever you like."His wife gathered together the jewelry and goods she had, and he took them and slipped away.Three days later, Abbas came to the wife of Hajjaj and asked, "What has your husband done?" She told him that he had left on such-and-such a day, and said, "May Allah not grieve you, Abu al-Fadl. The news that reached you was painful for us."He replied, "Indeed, may Allah not grieve me. By Allah's praise, things are only as we had hoped. Allah has granted His Messenger ﷺ victory over Khaybar, the divinely allotted shares have been distributed there, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has chosen Safiya for himself. If you have any need of your husband, go and join him."She said, "By Allah, I think you are speaking the truth."He said, "Indeed I am truthful, and the matter is just as I have told you."Then he went out until he came to the gatherings of Quraysh. As he passed by them they would say, "May only good befall you, Abu al-Fadl."He said to them, "Only good has befallen me, praise be to Allah. Hajjaj bin Ilat has informed me that Allah granted His Messenger victory over Khaybar, that Allah's allotted shares were distributed there, and that the Messenger chose Safiya for himself. He asked me to keep this hidden for three days. He came only to collect his wealth and whatever he had here, then to leave."So Allah turned the gloom that had befallen the Muslims onto the polytheists. The Muslims, who had each shut themselves up in their homes in despondency, came out and gathered around Abbas. He told them the news, and the Muslims rejoiced, while the gloom, rage, and grief returned upon the polytheists.
