He said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Hudaybiya, beneath the tree that Allah Almighty mentioned in the Quran, and the branches of that tree were falling across the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ali bin Abu Talib and Suhayl bin Amr were seated before him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali, may Allah Almighty be pleased with him, "Write, In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate."Suhayl bin Amr caught hold of his hand and said, "We do not recognize the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Write in our agreement what we do recognize."So the Prophet said, "Write, In Your name, Allah." Then Ali wrote, "This is the settlement agreed upon by Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with the people of Makkah."Suhayl bin Amr again seized his hand and said, "We would have wronged you if we accepted that you are His Messenger. Write in our agreement what we recognize."The Prophet said, "Write, This is the settlement agreed upon by Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Muttalib. And I am indeed the Messenger of Allah." So he wrote it.While we were in that situation, thirty young men came out against us bearing weapons and rushed at us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed against them, and Allah took away their sight. We advanced on them and seized them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, "Did you come under anyone's covenant? Has anyone granted you safe conduct?"They replied, "No."So he set them free, and Allah
revealed, "And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within the valley of Makkah after He had given you victory over them, and Allah is Seeing of what you do" [Fath 48:24].
Imam Ahmad narrated it (16800) from Zayd bin Hubab, who said, Husayn bin Waqid narrated to me, who said, Thabit Bunani narrated to me, from Abdullah bin Mughafal Muzani, who said, and then he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Husayn bin Waqid, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan. As for what Abdullah bin Ahmad said following the hadith, "Hammad bin Salama said regarding this hadith, from Thabit, from Anas. But Husayn bin Waqid said, from Abdullah bin Mughafal, and this is what I consider correct, Allah willing."I say, it would not be far-fetched for Thabit Bunani to have had two teachers, one being Anas, as in the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, and the other being Abdullah bin Mughafal, as in the hadith of Husayn bin Waqid, with neither narration invalidating the other.Hakim (2/460-461) said, after citing it from the hadith of Husayn bin Waqid, "This is a hadith that is sahih according to the criterion of the two sheikhs, since it is not far-fetched that Thabit heard from Abdullah bin Mughafal, and the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) agreed on including the hadith of Muawiya bin Qurra, and on the hadith of Humayd bin Hilal from him (meaning Abdullah bin Mughafal). And Thabit was older than both of them."
