Abdullah bin Umar reported,

In a lengthy hadith, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Abd al-Rahman bin Awf to prepare himself for a military expedition over which the Prophet had appointed him as commander. The next morning, he came wearing a turban of black cotton cloth. The Prophet ﷺ called him over, untied the turban, then wrapped it around his head himself, letting four fingers' length or so hang down behind him.The Prophet then said, "This is how you should wear the turban, Ibn Awf. It is more proper and more becoming."He then ordered Bilal to hand him the banner. He praised Allah and said, "Go forth together to fight in the cause of Allah. Fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Do not steal from the spoils, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate the dead, and do not kill a child. This is the covenant of Allah and the practice of your Prophet among you."
