The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned me and said, "It has reached me that Khalid bin Sufyan bin Nabih al-Hudhali is gathering people against me to raid me, and he is at Uranah. Go to him and kill him."I said, "Messenger of Allah, describe him to me so I may recognize him."He said, "When you see him, you will feel a shudder come over you."So I set out girded with my sword until I came upon him at Uranah, where he was with some women travelers, scouting out a place to camp for them. It was around the time of the afternoon prayer. When I saw him, I felt exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had described, the shudder. I approached him, but feared that some struggle between us might keep me from the prayer, so I prayed as I walked toward him, gesturing with my head for the bowing and prostration. When I reached him, he asked, "Who is the man?"I replied, "A man of the Arabs who has heard of you and of your gathering forces against this man, so he has come to you for that purpose."He said, "Indeed, I am engaged in that."I walked with him for a while, and when I had the chance, I struck him with my sword until I killed him. Then I left, leaving his women travelers bent over him. When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he saw me, he said, "May the face be successful."I said, "I have killed him, Messenger of Allah."He said, "You have spoken the truth."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose with me and brought me into his house, where he gave me a staff and said, "Keep this with you, Abdullah bin Unays."I went out with it among the people, and they asked, "What is this staff?"I said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave it to me and ordered me to keep it."They said, "Will you not return to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about it?"So I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, why have you given me this staff?"He said, "It is a sign between you and me on the Day of Resurrection. The fewest of people on that day will be those who lean on staffs."So Abdullah fastened it to his sword, and it remained with him until he died, when he ordered that it be placed with him in his shroud, and we buried them together.
Ahmad (16047), Abu Yaala (905), Ibn Khuzayma (983) who graded it sahih, and Ibn Hibban (7160) all narrated it through the route of Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Muhammad bin Jafar bin Zubayr told me, from the son of Abdullah bin Unays, from his father, and he related it. The son of Abdullah bin Unays is named Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Unays. Bukhari and Ibn Abu Hatim gave him an entry without mentioning any criticism or endorsement of him, and Ibn Hibban listed him among his reliable narrators. He is not alone in transmitting the essence of the story, as more than one narrator corroborated him.Ibn Hajar also graded its chain hasan in Fath al-Bari (2/437). We have already mentioned it in the Book of Prayer, in the chapter on the prayer of the pursuer and the pursued. This report has also been narrated from Ubada bin Samit, but it is not sound.
