Abdullah bin Umar reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr about the captives, and Abu Bakr said, "They are your own people and your kin, so let them go."Then he consulted Umar, who said, "Kill them."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took ransom for them, and Allah عز وجل revealed, "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land" up to His words, "So eat of what you have gained, lawful and good" [Anfal 8:67–69].Later the Prophet ﷺ met Umar and said, "A calamity nearly struck us for going against your view."
